More than forty years of experience in the investment management industry including most recently serving as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of a 1940 act investment trust, as co-Managing Partner of a registered investment adviser, and as a Portfolio Manager and Research Analyst with deep experience across a variety of companies and industries. During my business life, I have founded three investment advisory businesses and helped to build another from roughly $500 million to $12 billion in assets under management during my tenure. From 1999 through late 2008, I was the #2 officer at Fairholme Capital Management and a Director/Analyst/PM of its affiliated Fairholme Fund during much of a ten-year period when the firm roughly tripled our investors' assets while the S&P 500 Index earned roughly zero over the same period - leading to one of the best mutual fund performance records for a decade. I have served as a Board Member of two public 1940 Act investment companies with more than a decade of senior governance experience.Subsequent to Fairholme, I co-founded GoodHaven Capital Management, which commenced operations in late 2010 and early 2011. In December 2019, co-Managing Partner Larry Pitkowsky became the sole Managing Partner and I became a Minority Partner in GoodHaven in a consensual restructuring of the firm.At the Rutgers Business School, I have guest lectured on the paradoxes of indexation and passive investing and was a panelist for a class on business ethics.
