Staff Hardware Engineer

Current

Hickory, North Carolina, Us

Sep 2018 - Present

Senior Rf/Optical/Software Engineer

West Chester, Pa, Us

- Designed multiple multi-layer PCBAs for use in RF over Fiber Systems. Responsible for defining the requirements, selecting components, simulating the performance using LTspice and AWR Microwave Office/AXIEM, creating the schematic and laying out the board in Autodesk Eagle, coordinating the build at the CM, defining test procedures, and system integration and validation. Designs ranged from digital circuits with microcontrollers to high frequency boards up to 20 GHz with microwave switches, amplifiers, attenuators, etc.- Used knowledge of Agilent/Keysight test equipment (network analyzers, signal generators, spectrum analyzers, and so on) and Visual Studio (vb.net and c#) to lead the effort to automate testing of PCBAs and systems for development and production. Used Git and VSTS for version control and code sharing. - Created desktop applications using Visual Studio (vb.net and c#) to automate data collection and reporting. Created a tool for system monitoring tool used internally and distributed to customers. Also used APIs to add additional functions and usability to existing software such as Excel.- Programmed PIC microcontrollers using the CCS Compiler and Visual Studio Code for PCBAs used both as stand alone modules and as slaves in a larger system.- Responsible for adding SNMP capabilities to RF over Fiber systems. Duties include implementing a third party SNMP server, defining traps, and writing MIBs. Currently investigating adding custom SNMP capabilities to Lantronix and Digi embedded Ethernet servers.- Decomposed system specifications into RF component and module chains. Simulated RF chains using AWR Microwave Office. Evaluated optical modules including direct and external modulators, photodiodes, RF modules including standard and bi-directional amplifiers, power supply modules, media converters, and so on.

Sep 2014 - Sep 2018

Rf Engineer - Rf Over Fiber Systems

Optium/Finisar

- Responsible for designing, prototyping, manufacturing, verifying, and documenting numerous broadband IF/RF/Microwave over Fiber links at the board and system level from 20 kHz to 50 GHz. These direct and external modulation links included EDFAs and fiber lengths up to 100 km.- Evaluated the validity of requests for new modules and systems by interfacing with mechanical, software, and digital hardware engineers. Proved out new requests by modifying existing designs, creating schematics using OrCad, directing PCB layouts in PADS, evaluating new analog, digital, and RF components, performing system level RF cascade analysis, investigating fiber effects, and checking performance over temperature. Software tools such as AWR Microwave Office, AppCAD, and Matlab were utilized to accomplish these tasks.- Authored firmware specifications for embedded microcontrollers and detailed requirements for customer telnet, USB, and Ethernet communication interfaces. Created schematics to include the required communication components on these modules. Tested and verified the interfaces on the final product. - Devised complete module and system tuning and test procedures, identified test equipment requirements, authored user manuals, and supported customers.- Designed a complete backplane-based, rack-mounted system containing transmitter and receiver RF over Fiber plug-in cards that operated at L and C band. Responsibilities included everything from tuning the S-parameters to finding ways to monitor card heath and report status back to the main rack controller through a webpage based GUI.- Redesigned tunable analog DWDM XFP modules to extend their operational frequency range from 1 GHz out to 3 GHz- Designing the circuits and systems referenced above required selecting and evaluating RF amplifiers, broadband tuning elements, predistorters, EDFAs, lasers, photodetectors, optical modulators, microprocessors, RF cables and connectors, op amps, voltage regulators, etc.

May 2007 - Jul 2014

Product / Support Engineer - Microwave Point To Point Radios

Austin, Texas, Us

- Headed work cell teams responsible for sustaining the volume production of a frequency synthesizer / frequency multiplier card and an IF mixer card used in high capacity point-to-point microwave radios- Analyzed manufacturing test data using JMP to identify and correct design issues with components, circuits, software, SMT processes, functional test stations, supplier quality, etc.- Served as team lead for a DOE to eliminate Flux contamination underneath VCOs on PLL circuits. The DOE outcome resulted in changing the build and test process. These changes drastically decreased the number of system sync losses caused by phase noise issues over temperature.- Used a year of lessons learned to develop a new version of an IF Mixer card that improved functional test yields from 85% to 95% - Validated the technical correctness of all engineering change orders from the component through the system level prior to introduction to volume manufacturing - Acted as Transition Manager for changing PCBA contract manufacturers on an entire RF product line. Received the Harris Excellence Award for individual contributions to the success of this project.- Led numerous pilots to introduce enhancements, redesigns, and cost reductions to existing and new products into high volume manufacturing

Aug 2003 - May 2007

Bts Development Engineer - Cellular Base Stations

Chicago, Illinois, Us

- Owned PCB based RF splitter, combiner, and active switching matrix designs used in 800 MHz and 1.9 GHz CDMA Cellular Base Stations- Created and simulated circuits using ADS, directed PCB layouts using Mentor Graphics tools, created prototype boards, oversaw proto and production builds, identified test requirements, developed manufacturing tests, evaluated performance trends using Six Sigma analysis, and troubleshot defects- Evaluated low-loss PCB materials and their effects on RF designs - Led a team that developed system level RF performance tests to ensure that third-generation WCDMA base stations met 3GPP standards
