Since 1973 when I worked with Lillian Hellman on Hammett, and Helga Greene on Chandler, I have promoted undervalued pulp fiction writers, primarily from Black Mask Magazine, as important artists influential on all levels of American narration. In 1973 I introduced Chandler scholar, Dr. Frank MacShane of Columbia University in NYC, to Hammett scholar, Dr. Steven Marcus of Columbia University in NYC. Both were working on major new publishing projects under authorization of each great literary estate. Neither knew of the other's work, or that they were teaching at the same university! I knew because I was in correspondence with both Chandler's estate and with Hammett's estate as I prepared my first newsstand edition of Black Mask Magazine. My work was uniquely both a major scholarly endeavor, and an innovative mass market publishing experiment.
