Chief Software Architect
Rewrote the NodeJS monolith into Java, moved from Heroku to GCP GKE, deployed Debezium to sync data between services, leveraged asynchronous events to provide reliability guarantees. Started breaking up the monolith. Built new back end features, like LibraryDesigned and racked up a redundant DirecTV head end solution for Black Desert Resort in Ivans, Utah, that converted 276 TV channels to HLS streams for deployment to the TVs in guest rooms, bars, and restaurants. Load tested solution to verify that it could stream to 4,000 TVs.
Chief Software Architect
Leading Kenect's Developer Experience team, we focused on enabling our engineering teams to manage their own infrastructure, move faster, and make better architectural decisions. We provide consultancy services to the teams, focus on cross-cutting concerns (team-wise) such as overall platform performance, billing, security, tracing, build pipelines, kubernetes, newrelic, alerting, analytics, etc. and we maintain some of the main repositories/libraries that the core services share.I still engage often with the teams to help ensure we're all pulling mostly in the same technical direction, while fostering as much team autonomy as possible, and maintaining a scalable and sufficiently performant experience for our customers.
Sr Java Architect
Initially embedded on the core platform engineering team, and working as the backend chapter lead. In my first week I tuned a database query, that was causing many performance issues across the platform, to the point that it provided a year or so of breathing room. Within the first few months I identified and solved performance problems with users of our largest customers searching through contacts.Charted out what an ideal micro-service architecture for Kenect might look like. Helped the team document the major pieces of architectural debt, made a case for prioritizing some, and then started making it happen. Established patterns for syncing data between services so we could eliminate a large number of inter-service calls that were indirectly responsible for several cascade failures in my first couple of weeks. I evolved this to use Debezium for better reliability.I also introduced medium tests, and built out Junit5 extensions to simplify making them. Although they provide a lot of value, they are not as fast on a Spring Boot+JPA project as they have previously been on Dropwizard+Guice+Jdbi projects, and some of the services are still really too large to effectively test with this strategy. My biggest achievement was speeding up the inbox queries. After evaluating several technologies and approaches, I settled on PostgreSQL (Kenect was exclusively using MySQL before this) with heavily partitioned tables. I helped build out a new inbox-service for this, and then worked on tuning the most critical. This resulted in reducing the 99.9th percentile down from ~12s to <0.5s, and the 99.99th percentile down to ~1s. This query supports many search parameters, so speeding it up this extent required considerable effort/creativity.
Tribe Engineering Leader (Director Of Engineering)
Weave loosely implements the Spotify Model. Tribe leadership consists of an Engineering Leader, Architect, and a Product Leader. Our tribe owns the telephony infrastructure, the phone platform, the messaging platform, and the mobile app - some of the most critical core components of the Weave eco-system - and many of the features built on these platforms - the TUI (voicemail, voicemail, business phone features, etc), automated messaging (SMS and email), marketing tools (Email campaigns and reviews integrations), etc.I lead 36 awesome software engineers, including 6 chapter leaders (engineering managers) across 8 teams. I love talking to engineers, tech leads, chapter leads - facilitating open discussions so we can discover better ways to organize and increase effectiveness and efficiency, while maintaining happiness, and then providing the space and momentum to let these improvements succeed. Collectively we find many opportunities for incrementally improving processes, communications, meetings, organizational structure, and alignment across the tribe. A fun part of my job is finding and hiring great candidates, while preserving Weave's awesome culture.I started the initiative to make our tribe into the "The tribe of great days every day" (I was really impressed by "Leaders eat Last" by Simon Sinek) and this initiative is gaining momentum as we discuss it as a tribe and try to identify and eliminate the things that could limit the greatness of our days. I spent considerable effort improving the assessment process to make the requirements for promotions clearer for engineers and chapter leaders, and working heavily with chapter leaders and dev leadership to improve and clarify the assessment objectives over time.A big part of my role is inspiring engineers, ensuring they have what they need to succeed, collecting feedback about concerns that need to be addressed at a department level and feeding that information back to the executives.
