Dr. Keith Foo is a Principal Scientist in the Engineering Mechanics Department at A*STAR Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC). With more than 15 years of post-PhD research experience in mechanics of materials and structures, he has expertise in theoretical modeling, engineering simulation, and scientific computing. He has led various projects on smart structures and active materials, managed scientists, and supervised FYP/PhD students. [Research interests & expertise] Keith's current research focuses on the multiphysics coupling behaviour of active materials and smart multifunctional structures. Examples include lithium-ion batteries, structural batteries, electrochemically active materials and electroactive polymers. His expertise includes (1) developing theoretical models and specialized numerical methods to solve coupled problems; and (2) coding the finite element method via open-source codes and user subroutines in commercial softwares.[Achievements] Over his career, Keith has co-authored >30 publications in high-impact journals such as Science, Adv. Funct. Mat., Adv. Sci., J. Mech. Phys. Solids, and Extreme Mech. Lett. (Google Scholar: ~4900 citations, h-index=27). His research with collaborators has also been highlighted in popular media such as New Scientist and Reuters. He has also collaborated with experimentalists to develop applications for structural batteries, smart actuators, artificial muscles, energy harvesters, and soft robots. Other work includes industry engagement with partners from the electronics, defence, and aerospace industries. [Previous experience] Prior to his current position at IHPC, Keith was a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard University. He holds a PhD in mechanical engineering from NTU, where he was also the top graduate for his B.Eng.
