Dr. Bowman has nearly 200 publications, including one hundred journal publications and the textbook βAn Introduction to Mechanical Behavior of Materialsβ (Wiley, 2004). He has been PI for research awards and sponsored contracts exceeding $9 million and a co-PI for awards and contracts totaling more than $10 million. Dr. Bowman has given plenary or invited research presentations in fifteen countries and had longstanding collaborations with colleagues in Germany and Australia. He became a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society in 2000 and has held several society-wide positions. At Purdue University, awards include receiving the MSE Best Teaching Award in 1992 and 1995 and Purdueβs highest teaching award, the Charles Murphy Undergraduate Teaching Award in 1995 (1 of 36 recipients from Purdue Engineering 1966-2020). In 2003, Dr. Bowmanβs name was added to the Purdue Book of Great Teachers (1 of 75 from Engineering in Purdue history). In 2007, he received the Purdue College of Engineering Mentoring Award, recognizing his mentoring of graduate students and junior faculty. His support for first-year engineering programs, as well as K-12 and undergraduate engineering education research, led to his appointment as the first Professor of Engineering Education (by courtesy) from MSE. In 2012, he was invested as the first Duchossois Leadership Professor in the IIT Armour College of Engineering. In Spring 2018, Dr. Bowman gave the third University of Michigan MSE Distinguished Alumni Lecture. He is likely the first out gay man to lead a public research university's engineering college as dean. For a full list of publications see:http://scholar.google.com/citations?user=FpweNWQAAAAJ&hl=en Google Scholar Bowman KJ

Dean Of The College Of Engineering & Information TechnologyUniversity Of Maryland Baltimore County Aug 2017 - Jul 2024Baltimore, Md, UsIn 2017, Dr. Bowman became Dean of the College of Engineering & Information Technology (COEIT) at UMBC with a faculty appointment in mechanical engineering as the Constellation Professor of Information Technology and Engineering. In 2020, Dr. Bowman became a founding co-chair of UMBCβs Inclusion Council. UMBC is a rising Carnegie R1 (effective 2022) university renowned for educational innovation, shared governance, and inclusion with a strong liberal arts foundation. COEITβs programs include a broad portfolio of engineering, computing, business, and management topics. In the past six years COEITβs total enrollment has grown from about 4800 to over 6500, which is about 47% of UMBCβs ~14,000 students, supported by nearly 200 full-time faculty (90 T/TT) and staff with total expenditures that have grown from ~$45m to over $60M. A focused campaign to raise the visibility of our graduate programs resulted in an increase in applications from about 1200 to more than 11,000, enabling substantial growth and greater selectivity. Our graduate enrollment grew from ~1140 to ~2450 in six years. The majority of COEITβs undergraduates are people of color, having increased from 48% to nearly 70% in the past six years. COEIT has established a strong college identity, initiated projects elevating faculty and staff professional development, and deepened engagement with external stakeholders and student organizations. More than one-third of COEITβs full-time faculty were hired since 2017. Efforts to promote higher proposal success demonstrated considerable growth: research awards for grants and contracts in the college were more than $28M in the 2023 fiscal year, increasing from about 31% to 41% of UMBCβs research expenditures exclusive of NASA Centers and The Hilltop Institute. Total for that year is more than double any year prior to 2018. COEIT elevated its support for NSF CAREER recipients resulting in nine of UMBCβs twelve award recipients since 2020. -

Dean, College Of Science & EngineeringSan Francisco State University Jul 2015 - Aug 2017San Francisco, Ca, UsPrior to UMBC, Dr. Bowman served as Dean of the College of Science & Engineering (CoSE) at San Francisco State University (SF State), an urban, minority-serving, comprehensive research university in the twenty-three campus California State University System. He joined SF State with an interest in understanding their outstanding success in advancing a diverse group of undergraduate and graduate students to research careers in science and engineering. CoSE consists of nine academic units and six centers, more than four hundred faculty, instructors and staff and about six thousand majors. CoSEβs broad range of degree programs includes four engineering disciplines, several concentrations in biology, chemistry & biochemistry, computer science, earth & climate science, geography & environment, marine sciences, mathematics, physics & astronomy and psychology. CoSEβs annual finances consist of approximately $25 million in general fund expenditures and an average of nearly $14 million in research and sponsored projects. In addition to having operations across five buildings on the SF State Holloway campus, the college has research, teaching, environmental monitoring and outreach activities across Northern California, including two remote sites, the Estuary and Ocean Science (EOS) Center at the Romberg Tiburon Campus and the Sierra Nevada Field Campus. EOS hosts nearly 180 faculty, staff and students at a fifty-three-acre site in Marin County that is also the only academic marine research center on the San Francisco Bay. Dr. Bowman also co-led a feasibility and design study for a proposed new science building on the SF State Holloway Campus with Skidmore Owings & Merrill, LLP that resulted in a plan titled the Student Center for Innovation and Design. -
Chair And Duchossois Leadership ProfessorIllinois Institute Of Technology Aug 2011 - Jul 2015Chicago, Illinois, UsDr. Bowman served as Chair of the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering (MMAE) at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) for four years wherein he led MMAE during the successful re-accreditation of the ME, AE and MSE degree programs. In 2012 he was invested as the first Duchossois Leadership Professor in the IIT Armour College of Engineering. MMAE@IIT offers three ABET-accredited BS degrees, three Masterβs of Engineering degrees, three Masterβs of Science degrees and two PhD degrees. MMAE has about 500 undergraduate students, 200 graduate students and an alumni base approaching 6000. Of the graduate students, nearly two thirds are enrolled in Professional Masterβs degree programs. At IIT he gained valuable experience in optimizing program delivery with tight financial constraints while establishing strategic plans for furthering success with a very talented, multi-disciplinary faculty. MMAE successfully promoted two assistant professors and three associate professors during his first three years and all four asst prof hires have all received NSF CAREER awards. He also led a successful search to hire a new chair for IITβs Social Sciences department. -
