Interim Cio

Great Western Insurance Company

I began working with Great Western at the invitation of the CEO, John Lindquist. John had read The Phoenix Project and was looking for help to improve his IT organization's ability to deliver. Initially, I provided training and coaching to IT leadership and team members. We made Scrum our delivery framework. We organized delivery teams to align with business needs, and worked with business unit leaders to develop backlogs and prioritize work for each team. At the same time, I worked with the executive team to help them appreciate Lean/Agile values and principles and support the teams' efforts to improve. Within a few Sprint cycles, teams were achieving better results. Business unit leaders and front line workers noticed the difference: greater transparency, more collaboration between business users and developers, improved quality, and a focus on high priority work. Projects that had languished in "in progress" mode for months or longer were getting completed. In addition to improving software delivery, we worked to inculcate in the IT organization the "Three Ways" principles that underpin DevOps. By identifying impediments to continuous integration and delivery, the team is able to eliminate them and further improve quality and time to delivery.Beyond Agile/Scrum training and coaching, my efforts have included leading discussions around build vs buy decisions for replacing legacy systems; engaging vendors to evaluate their solutions and select the best for a legacy system replacement; data warehouse development for business intelligence and analytics capability; systems integration patterns and practices; and, capital and operating budget planning and management.
