Profile bio

About Keith May

I am an archaeologist at Historic England (HE) with particular experience in developing, coordinating and implementing strategies for Historic Environment Digital Information.I am a Visiting Professor in the Hypermedia Research Group within the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science, at the University of South Wales. I am an Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the University of Sheffield. My research work applies semantic and knowledge-based technologies, such as ontological modelling and NLP techniques, to the digital archaeology domain by developing new methods for searching, interlinking, and reusing digital archive data, controlled vocabularies, and archaeological documentation. I was awarded an AHRC/UKRI Leadership Fellowship for The Matrix project which improved ways that digital archaeological stratigraphic data can be made more re-useable and Follow-on-Funding for The Archaeologists Guide to Good Practice (AG2GP-Handbook) providing best practice guidance for recording, analysing, and re-using archaeological stratigraphy. At Historic England I take a lead role in Digital Research, Knowledge and Development Strategies including the Heritage Information Access Strategy, using IT to increase the sharing of FAIR data across the historic environment sector. My vision is for historic environment digital information to flow smoothly between users from the point of first recording at investigation, through records that enable analysis, synthesis and re-use of results and enable easy access to that information through digital archives and publications. Such digital outputs should enable dissemination of research, analyses and interpretive reports, to a range of appropriately identified audiences, thereby creating the best foundations for future research to build upon.I have worked at EH/HE in various roles including developing, project managing, and providing QA for their archaeology research project grants budgeting and Management Information Systems; information and systems analyst; project assurance officer; field archaeologist in England and internationally; project & programme manager; project management trainer; and in my current role as Heritage Information Strategy Adviser for historic environment digital research in the Analytics department. Before joining EH I worked as a field archaeologist in London, Hertfordshire & Kent.Specialties: Archaeology, Digital Information Strategies, Knowledge Management, Cultural Heritage Ontologies.

Listed skills include Archaeology, Cultural Heritage, Ontologies, Information Management, and 21 others.
