As a trial attorney, I have been handling complex business litigation for the past thirty years in the areas of banking litigation, construction-related disputes, intellectual property, estates and trusts litigation, contract disputes, environmental law, professional negligence and regulatory matters. My clients include utilities, banks, hospitals, builders, engineers, architects, real estate brokers, manufacturers, inventors, developers, non-for-profit entities and other businesses. These clients range from Fortune 500 companies to emerging entrepreneurs. I provide experienced advocacy in court, and also use that experience to counsel clients in drafting contracts and taking other prudent actions to stay out of court. I have extensive courtroom experience, having tried numerous cases to verdict in both state and federal courts, as well as litigating arbitrations and administrative proceedings.Prior to joining the firm I served as an assistant attorney general with the State of Minnesota, representing the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. I chair the Board of Directors of the Fund for the Legal Aid Society, an organization of lawyers and law firms that raises more than $1.3 million a year for Legal Aid. The Hennepin County Bar Association awarded me its 2011 Pro Bono Publico Award, presented annually to one attorney in the private bar “in recognition of the time, knowledge, and devotion given utilizing legal skills for the good of our community.” The Ramsey County Bar Association gave me a similar award in 2019. I have been named among The Best Lawyers in America for the past ten years, and a Super Lawyer for the past eight years.After law school, I clerked for Chief Judge Donald P. Lay of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and while in law school, I served as President of the Minnesota Law Review.
