Together for Hope (TFH) Appalachia is a rural development coalition, which follows the practice of asset-based community development (ABCD), believing that the key to alleviating poverty in these rural areas already exists with the people who are there. We are part of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship’s national TFH Coalition which includes 301 counties in five regions (Appalachia, Delta, Black Belt, Rio Grande Valley, and Native Lands). Fifty-seven of the TFH counties are in Appalachia—39 in Kentucky, eight in West Virginia, seven in Tennessee, two in Virginia, and one in OhioMy favorite passage of scripture, and my mission, is Luke 10:25-42. When Jesus was challenged by the expert in the law, a priority emerged, “Love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and your neighbor as yourself.” Luke elaborates on what Love of God and neighbor looks like in the parable of the Good Samaritan and the story of Jesus in the home of Martha and Mary. In this “Great Commandment” and these insightful stories, I see the focus for a balanced church ministry of action and devotion through community, missions, witness, care, prayer, worship, teaching, and leadership.
