Initial career - Australian Army; retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after some 26 years. Some highlights -Squadron Command, 152 Signals Squadron (In the SASR) - posting came as a surprise and was a blast. Lots of policy stuff in Canberra: project officer in the Directorate of Personnel - developed an education policy paper (The Core Education Requirement for General Service Officers); as Assistant Director, Strategy and Analysis in the Directorate of Army Research and Analysis, I was principal researcher for Army-21 (1996-97) - a Government mandated review of Army (a needs analysis followed by force-structure review); thereafter a 12 month secondment to the Australian Defence Studies Centre at the Defence Academy - planned and ran an international conference on 'The Revolution in Military Affairs' (RMA). This conference was followed by the publication of a professional text on the RMA (1998) charting the implications of the IT revolution for the military. One final contribution, finished my career at Army's Command and Staff College as Assistant Director of the Centre for Leadership Studies, extending the human implications of the RMA for command, leadership and management in Army/ Defence. Starting a PhD (in Education) I then joined academe for a different life (insert whatever you imagine here). Skills: staff & curriculum development, leadership and organisational development and change management. Past institutions: most recently, The Chinese University of Hong Kong as the Associate Director of the Centre for Learning Enhancement and Research. Earlier, briefly at UNSW at the Australian Defence Force Academy campus and before that the Graduate School of Management in La Trobe University. My research interests are in a) teaching and learning, and b) the design, delivery and evaluation of leadership and related soft-skills, including development of high-performance teams. I am active in community-services, mentoring and supervision of doctoral students and military and ex-service folks transitioning into civilian life (https://www.withyouwithme.com/).Goals: to work in a leadership and capability development role, and to write a reflective, sociological study on leadership development. External achievements aside, I enjoy working on leadership and Youth and Community Development; and leading the design & presentation of critical thinking, curriculum development and program evaluation.
