Fisheries Biologist Ii
I assisted with two major research projects for the NOAA-NMFS Lab in Panama City, Florida. The first was part of a Gulf-wide survey of juvenile shark abundance aptly named GULFSPAN. The second was a distribution and abundance survey of the smalltooth sawfish in Everglades National Park. For both surveys I operated small boats, used longline and gillnet methods of sampling, handled various coastal shark species and smalltooth sawfish, identified various marine fishes, quantified habitat, and trained new or inexperienced interns on our sampling techniques. In addition, the smalltooth sawfish survey allowed me to gain experience with telemetry including acoustic tracking (active/passive) and exposure to their respective software. I have data entry skills from both of these projects and aided in the writing, map development, and editing of the end of year reports for both projects.Outside of field work, I have experience writing Species of Concern Reviews, Status Reviews, and IUCN Redlist Assessments for various species, including the Alabama shad (Alosa alabamae), Family Pristidae, and the dwarf seahorse (Hippocampus zosterae). These reviews require extensive literature searches, compilation of large amounts of information and data, and map development using GIS.I also managed the Gulf Sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus) database, collaborating with state and federal scientists throughout the southeast.
