Dr Kelechi Andrew is a Population and Reproductive Health Specialist and Researcher whose goal is to build healthy communities one person at a time.One of my early reasons of pursuing a career in Public Health was listening to the regular 7 a.m. news in 2014, where I heard a headline about two deaths that had happened in a local community in Plateau State, North Central Nigeria, because the deceased had bathed and drank concentrated salt water to prevent them from contracting Ebola virus, they were both hypertensive, which unfortunately caused their untimely death.I just knew that something had to be done to reduce such unfortunate incidents and this led me to pursue a Masters degree in Public Health degree in 2016.Working with organizations like the Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria and the Rivers State Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS allowed me to advocate for public health issues , as part of my mission to support communities in making healthy lifestyle decisions. While working, I learned that figuring out health solutions for any community requires a grasp of the community social norms which informs the people’s actions and behavior. I currently devote my free time to a neighborhood youth organization where I mentor young people in their search for identity and life purpose and I regularly organize self-improvement and health programs targeted at educating them on a variety of issues affecting their overall health and well-being.Years later, in 2019, I started my PhD journey in Population and Reproductive Health, as a student who was seven months pregnant at the time and completed the program in record time because of my determination and drive. I designed and implemented ‘Undergrad STI Reach out’, which is an innovative virtual version of a sexually transmitted infection prevention package intervention to improve the STI knowledge and health-seeking behavior of female undergraduates in a public university, and this study revealed a 6.7% improvement in their STI knowledge.With the intention of boosting the visibility of African research papers, I and a few other African students who were located in various countries established the Pan African Research Organization, an online research group which has seen the publications of papers.I am open to collaborations and work focused on social health systems strengthening, youth development, social norms, research and opportunities to share work and help in building a more sustainable world around my area of experience and expertise.
