About Kelley V. Ponder, Mph, Ph.D.

With over 25 years of work experience in global health, international development, and community engagement, I am the Executive Director at RESTORE MOBILE, a nonprofit organization that restores historic properties and neighborhoods in Mobile, Alabama. I bring my expertise in public health, diplomacy, project management, and qualitative research to lead the strategic vision, partnerships, and operations of RESTORE MOBILE, while also teaching as an Adjunct Professor of Global Health at the University of Bridgeport. Previously, I managed the strategic partnerships and international exchange programs at the New Orleans Citizen Diplomacy Council, where I facilitated cultural and professional exchanges between local and international leaders. I also conducted research and evaluation projects on various topics, such as domestic violence, education, and public health, at Tulane University and inFocus Enterprises. As a passionate and collaborative leader, I aim to leverage my skills and experience to revitalize communities, promote cross-cultural understanding, and advance social and economic empowerment.

    Examined perceptions of domestic violence and help-seeking behaviors among women in post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans from 2005-2015. Findings show that many women face striking inequalities demonstrated in higher rates of poverty, lack of affordable housing, and one of the highest wage gaps in the United States. Patriarchal attitudes seen in legal institutions, racial bias, the police force, and political systems contribute to the perception of a gender bias against women.

    In 2005 the WFP established the Food Security Monitoring System (FSMS) in Burundi as the global pilot under the SENAC project. This consultancy assessed the appropriateness of each indicator and its ability to determine the vulnerability of households in Burundi. Constraints and limitations of the FSMS indicators were identified while reviewing the timing of data collection in order to determine the optimal data collection time-frame for analysis and reporting. Reintegration of displaced persons into Burundi were a major factor in the review to ascertain if food security issues had changed for the 880,000 IDPs and 400,000 refugees returned from Tanzania as a result of the 1994 genocide and 13 years of civil war (1993-2006).

    Guinea worm prevention activities implemented in Benin's Bourgou province communities include: education on proper use of and distribution of nylon filters to strain out the water fleas that host the effective larvae; monthly treatments of stagnant ponds with ABATE® larvicide; voluntary isolation of patients in case containment centers; direct advocacy with water organizations; and increased efforts to build safer hand-dug wells. Additional work in training volunteers and commune coordinators to carry out monthly surveillance and interventions. Educator and trainer of local, rural health centers in water, sanitation, and hygiene as a key public health issue (WASH). Other trainings included malaria prevention and treatment programs and polio vaccination programs and HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness.
