• Designed and taught American literature courses for students, many who were either poor writers or have little interest in the subject, that ensured their success. For fall semester 2016, all students on the Course Evaluation rated quality of instruction as “Very High” or “Above Average.” Student comments included: -Take it [the course]! Professor Olson is kind and cool, the class is interesting, and the semester project guarantees learning . . . . -She was very organized and laid out our course material with helpful steps and due dates. She also said very explicitly what was expected of us throughout the semester.• Paved the way for other PVCC instructors to teach online by developing 3 courses 17 years ago when web-based learning was in its infancy. Incorporated then-new pedagogical tools like blogs, digital video, discussion boards, and later Google applications. Awarded PVCC Educational Foundation grants. Now values those tools in teaching traditional and hybrid courses.• Incorporated an innovative service-learning component into a course such that students applied their writing skills working with nonprofits, resulting in a marked improvement in their skills and interest. Presented findings at a statewide community college conference (2001) and published article for national audience: “Connecting with Their Communities: Web-Based Instruction and Service Learning,” Community College Journal: Building a World of Learners (April/May 2002).
