At DoseBiome I worked to design a microencapsulation process for probiotics to provide: (1) targeted delivery to the small intestine, and (2) stability of probiotic viability during long term storage in both liquid and solid dosage forms. During this research, I have applied both full and fractional factorial central composite design principles (DOE) to optimize microgel formulations for cell viability through lyophilization and gastric fluid exposure, conducted routine bacterial cell culture, and utilised processing technologies such as lyophilization, electrospraying, and fluid bed coating.

I completed my MASc in chemical engineering under the supervision of Dr. Todd Hoare in September 2018. Through my research, I collaborated extensively with Ceapro Inc. to create biopolymer-based, macroporous hydrogel scaffolds using their proprietary supercritical fluid/gas expanded liquid processing technologies (PGX). I successfully designed, built and operated a lab-scale co-extrusion system for PGX to allow for the in situ crosslinking of polymers during processing, and produced anti-inflammatory drug-loaded macroporous hydrogels using both chitosan and alginate for wound healing applications. These hydrogel formulations exhibited negligible cytotoxicity, higher drug loading potential, and accelerated in vivo wound healing. During this time, I also taught fluid mechanics tutorials to groups of up to 50 students, facilitated introductory wet labs for chemical engineering students, and reconciled lab credit cards.

As a university Residence Don it was my responsibility to mentor and guide first year students, as well as maintain safety and community in residence. Before stepping into this role, I participated in two weeks of intensive training, including first-aid, applied suicide intervention, peer helping, and conflict intervention.

The Queen’s Innovation Connector Summer Initiative (QICSI) is a joint initiative between the Faculty of Engineering and the Queen’s School of Business with the purpose of advancing innovation and entrepreneurship. Students participate in a two-week intensive program to learn about entrepreneurship, corporate innovation and change management from faculty, alumni, entrepreneurs and business experts. Students then work in teams to develop their own companies or contribute to corporate innovation in partnership with industry.

As a project manager and progress coordinator for QUEST, I oversaw the planning, implementation, and tracking of our competition project. This included developing a schedule for the completion of the project, effectively allocating time and resources to specific deliverables, ensuring that deadlines were met, and organizing meetings and site visits for a team of ten.

During my work as a research assistant, I had the privilege of working with Dr. Simon Hesp on his research into the characterization of asphalt cements and mixtures. I was responsible for conducting literature reviews, collecting and analyzing data, acquiring equipment or materials for the lab, and summarizing experimental results. I was also required to use state-of-the art laboratory equipment to do the following: - Mix, compact and cut asphalt cement samples - Spectrometry Analysis (IR, XRF, NMR) - Conducting sophisticated test methods (such as Dynamic Shear Rheometry, Bending Beam Rheometry, Double Edged Notched Tension Testing, Nano-indentation Testing, Differential Scanning Calorimetry)Using the experimental data I obtained through this testing, I was able to co-author three scientific papers. I had the opportunity to present two of these papers at the Annual Transportation Research Board Conference in Washington, DC during January of 2014.
