A molecular & integrative physiologist by training and a collaborative team leader by experience, throughout my career as a researcher and laboratory director I have thrived when bringing together talented scientists to solve complex problems.As Director of the Breen Church Laboratory at UC San Diego, I specialize in targeted discovery of in vivo molecular mechanisms underlying disrupted endocrine function in reproductive, metabolic and immune/inflammatory disease models. My passion for this work stems from a commitment to improving human health and promoting biological resilience in the face of endocrine-related diseases and syndromes.Since the launch of the lab in 2011, our team has published over 35 studies on neural control of reproduction in response to stress, the role of glucocorticoids as a stress mediator, and the influence of estradiol on stress responses. The team’s contributions to the study of endocrine function have also been widely shared within the academic community and professional societies.I’m proud of the research our team has completed over the years, and at the same time, I am equally proud of the individual success of my team members. In my leadership role, I strive to create a culture of support, inclusion, and professional development which has resulted in each member of my staff successfully publishing and achieving research funding.In addition, I have a track record of success in effective strategic planning. Three key pillars of my strategic plan are growing and developing effective teams, publishing and promoting rigorous neuroendocrine science, and contributing to the scientific community. Uc San Diego - Associate Professor & Director - Breen Church LaboratoryUc San Diego Health Jul 2019 - PresentLa Jolla, CaLead research team focused on targeted discovery of the organization and activation of neural circuits that control endocrine function and behavior in normal physiologic conditions and disrupted in response to physiologic stress.Leadership:- Raised ~$550K annually from research grants to build Breen Church Laboratory, successfully funding six staff members including research associates, postdoctoral fellows, and undergraduate researchers across three NIH-funded core research programs - Drove high levels of team member success including contributions to publications and funding by successfully identifying, mentoring, and developing talent across all skill and experience levels.- Achieved strong staff retention by building a culture focused on teamwork, collaboration, and creating consistent learning and professional development plans, including opportunities for recognition of successes.- Ensured health, safety, security and satisfaction of staff by crafting and overseeing adherence to biohazard, laboratory safety and IACUC protocols and procedures.Research:- Established reputation of rigorous scientific investigation to drive continued funding for the Breen Church Lab through the publication of over 35 peer-reviewed articles, annual domestic and international invited presentations, and leadership positions on NIH/NSF research review groups and international editorial boards.- Published technical resources for steroid-replacement in vivo modeling, ultra-sensitive luteinizing hormone ELISA assay and “stress-free” tail tip blood sampling (video and written publication) addressing resource voids in the field and driving increased funding to in vivo neuroendocrine research. Video has garnered over 12K views.- Created cross-disciplinary collaborations to expand research contributions in models for targeted investigation of gut microbiome dysbiosis, transgender/nonbinary hormone therapy, and epigenomics and transcriptomics basis driving hypothalamic amenorrhea.
