Research Scientist I

Male Fertility Lab

While this title is Research Scientist, I also performed several of the duties of a Clinical Lab Andrologist. I perform multiple clinical tests and preparations for men, mainly those who are dealing with infertility or wish to preserve their fertility. Some of these are basic semen analyses, post-vasectomy checks, intrauterine inseminations, and cryopreservations. Day to day, I assist with lab set up and other preparations, cleaning, closing, and quality control. Occasionally, I work on ongoing databases that provide valuable information toward research papers and to confirm that current protocols and preparations are effective. Currently, I'm assisting with two research projects. One is a database that logs successful (live births) pregnancies from Intrauterine Inseminations, prepared here at the Male Fertility Lab over several years. Factors such as hormone treatments, male/female infertility factors, and quality of the semen sample are all considered. Another is a proteomics project that looks at the difference in genes and levels of gene expression between patients (both fertile and infertile) in their purified sperm samples. This position also allows me to briefly interact with patients in person and over the phone to answer general questions, schedule or reschedule appointments, and more.

Educational Leadership Consultant

Indianapolis, In

As an Educational Leadership Consultant for Alpha Xi Delta, I have had the opportunity to travel 30 times around the nation to work with 20 universities, fostering the development of new chapters and guiding chapters to meet the expectations of the National Fraternity. In my role, I have individually advised over 300 women on how to harness their leadership skills and improve their personal development. Being a mentor calls for the utilization of critical thinking to resolve conflicts and form individualized solutions, as well as promoting working in and with teams through collaboration and conflict mediation to effectively achieve a common goal. Timely and accurate reporting to various stakeholders is critical for my personal success and the success of those with whom I work. Other conditions of this job have required me to track and record my expenses, implement strategic branding to reach prospective clients, effectively on-board newly recruited students to allow for easy engagement, and manage several projects simultaneously by utilizing time management skills, organizational knowledge, and delegation of tasks to others. Additionally, facilitating events that met the needs of over 1,000 individuals through educational programming has allowed me to further my public speaking skills.

Undergraduate Researcher

Parichy Lab

Uw Campus - Kincaid Hall

Parichy Lab focuses on stem cells, pigment pattern development and evolution, and metamorphosis in zebrafish, using Danio rerio as a model organism. The lab utilizes mutants that are phenotypically similar to closely related species to explore their various patterns and how related genes may have evolved. Through years of research, the lab has identified genes that play roles in interactions among pigment cells and their environment. Currently, the lab is focused on identifying other genes that are important in specific stripe patterns to reveal evolutionary changes in gene regulatory networks across Danio species. Specifically, I worked with a graduate student to focus on how a signaling molecule, endothelin, could have evolved in pigment cell lineages. Through my time working in the lab, I gained experience in problem solving, critical thinking, teamwork, and scientific writing and reporting. Additionally, I was able to practice several lab techniques, such as micropipetting, breeding zebrafish naturally and in vitro (egg and sperm retrieval), PCR and PCR purification, transformations, gel electrophoresis, DNA and RNA extractions, fluorescent screening, tissue collection, staging for specific stages of development, and more. While learning how to use different laboratory equipment, including various microscopes, a vibratome, and centrifuges, I also regularly contributed to the general upkeep and cleanliness of the lab. The lab has moved to the University of Virginia.
