I use the chemical compositions of volcanic rock and mineral samples to determine timing of eruptions and interpret pre-eruptive magma conditions and processes. My current research is focused on late Pleistocene to Holocene eruptions in the San Francisco volcanic field, Arizona. I conduct field work, apply argon dating and surface exposure dating, use microanalytical tools such as scanning electron microscope and electron microprobe, and work collaboratively with colleagues of various disciplines to learn more about this volcanic field and its potential volcanic hazards.

As Teaching Assistant for the Argon Geochronology Laboratory, prepared rock samples submitted by clients for 40Ar/39Ar dating; assisted and trained lab users in sample preparation. Expertise in mineral and groundmass preparation techniques includes Frantz magnetic separation, heavy liquid separation, acid leaching, handpicking under binocular microscope, packaging of samples for irradiation. Investigated textures and mineralogy of recently erupted volcanic ash samples from Nevado del Ruiz volcano in Colombia. Applied binocular microscopy and SEM analysis to characterize and compare eruptions from 1985 to 2015. Part of ongoing work conducted by Dr. Christopher Harpel at CVO in coordination with the Colombian Geological Service (SGC; Servicio Geológico Colombiano).
