The Seasonals is an independent magazine focused on alternative work lifestyles and outdoor work. The project started as a zine specific to Southeast Alaska, which my team and I created and distributed for free with the support of sponsors for each issue. Our goal was to foster a symbiotic relationship with the local community and seasonal workers in town for the summer. Due to popular demand, we decided to produce a full-size quarterly magazine for a global audience of adventure and outdoor workers.Our team was small and we all wore many hats, but my main contributions were in the following areas.- Scheduled and maintained deadlines for each issues.- Writing website copy, crafting product descriptions, and creating marketing materials.- Utilized skills in graphic and layout design for both the zine and full size magazine.- Managed relationships with a global community of contributors.- Managed half the relationships with stores carrying out magazine.- Developed systems for sales and distribution logistics.- Assumed responsibility for customer relations, including managing social media accounts.

In my previous role, I was responsible for welcoming guests on land or at our floating office and providing safety talks before kayak tours. I also shared general information about the local area with tourists, many of whom were visiting via cruise ships. Time management and attention to detail were crucial skills in this role, as we had to adhere to strict schedules for ferrying guests back to the harbor. Despite the challenges posed by the rainy weather in the rainforest, I consistently maintained a positive attitude and delivered good vibes to our guests.One instance that stands out to me as a time when I had to adapt in a stressful situation occurred when our floating office (a catamaran with only one operational engine) came unanchored in decent winds, just minutes before a group of six were set to return from their kayak tour. One operational engine meant less control, making it difficult to link up with the tour group and re-anchor the boat.Despite the challenges, I remained calm and used the radio to communicate with our captain, who was minutes away on our fast boat dropping a line for some halibut. I was able to successfully receive the guests and ensure that their experience was memorable, safe and enjoyable, rather than stressful all while assisting my captain to handle the boat. The group later raved about my handling of the situation and described it as an adventure to the owner. This experience taught me the importance of staying composed under pressure and finding creative solutions to unexpected challenges.
