I think that every one of us has the right to achieve without adopting someone else's vision of who we should be.We can get trapped in working for our jobs and fulfilling all of our responsibilities such that we lose sight of who we are, and there is no time or freedom to enjoy it. As a researcher and a woman in STEM, I understand our unique challenges of building and enjoying a successful career. I spent decades on the hamster wheel trying to thread that needle of being assertive 💪 (but not abrasive 🤯) and nice 😇 (but not a doormat 👞). I've been frustrated, overlooked, splained, and ready to quit more times than I can count.My first step towards enjoying my career was to ask myself a simple question: "What experience do I want to have?"No one had ever asked me this question, and investing the time to answer these six words set me on the path to making a career that I enjoyed.Regardless of your role, it's ok to get frustrated with the system.
