My fellowship work also includes an education and public outreach component in which I utilize my scientific expertise and communication skills to bring access to small telescopes and present fun, interactive, inquiry-based astronomy, physics, and even biology lessons to the public and scouting and school groups of varied ages.I use my BA in Astronomy & Physics from Boston University, PhD from Ohio State, and 5+ years of independent postdoctoral research in the US and abroad to better understand the active growth phase of the supermassive black holes that live in the center of distant galaxies. My research works understand the role these systems play in the evolution of galaxies over cosmic time. This research process consists of the following: (1) posing a question and hypothesis to study some unknown aspect of these growing black holes, (2) developing and submitting an observing program that must compete for the limited time available from observatories all over the world, so to obtain data as evidence to support my hypothesis, (3) processing and analyzing the data, by writing scripts and codes to perform such analyses, (4) evaluating the data in a physical context and quantifying my results in the context of my hypothesis, (5) reporting findings through refereed journal publications, conference presentations and written proceedings, and sometimes public talks.
