IronNet had only a handful of developers when I began working on their flagship product, IronDefense. This gave me a unique opportunity to contribute in a significant way from the very beginning of a tech start up, resulting in invaluable experience. Over four years I've helped build what is now a fairly complex distributed platform, using tools such as Kafka for message distribution and replay, Spark over HDFS for big-data behavior analytics, and CitusDB (distributed Postgres) for real-time search results of network traffic metadata. I've been involved in writing our APIs and services using tools like REST/Swagger and gRPC. Having worked on the project from the early days, I am often asked to debug issues in production. I've spent a significant amount of time building tooling to aid in debugging, such as integrating our applications with InfluxDB and building grafana dashboards. I also spearheaded the effort to write alarming logic for various systems within the product. There have been numerous challenges to overcome, and in such a high-velocity setting I've been sure stop every few months and assess the decisions we've made, appreciating the good ones, and learning from the bad. Near the end of my time at Ironnet, I worked on a team that built a new platform in AWS that ingests the interesting network findings (we call them "Alerts") from multiple IronDefense instances, and stored them in a multi-tenant fashion so our analysts could triage Alerts more efficiently.
