For my last clinical placement, I had the privilege of practicing at Brantford General Hospital in the Critical Care Unit and Emergency Department. During this placement, I learned to interpret telemetry slips, performed 12-lead ECGs, cared for tracheostomies and endotracheal tubes, interpreted lab values, performed initial assessments on patients in the ED and improved upon critical thinking skills!

My placement at Joseph Brant Hospital was my first clinical experience being one-on-one with a preceptor. While placed on the acute medicine floor, I learned how to effectively communicate with the inter-professional team, appropriately manage multiple patients and perform thorough assessments on newly admitted patients. Improving upon these skills helped me to increase my independence and autonomy as a student nurse!

At McMaster Children's Hospital, I was placed on the acute medicine floor and had the opportunity to practice many critical nursing skills and learn a lot! I helped to provide health education to patients and families, administered medications and feeds via PEG and NG tubes, interpreted vital signs and assessments on newborns and school-aged children, and collaborated with families in order to perform nursing interventions.

Some of the skills I learned and practiced during this clinical placement included wound care on post-operative patients, IV medication administration, building rapport with patients, and improving upon my documentation and time-management skills!

While in this setting I developed head-to-toe assessment skills, transferred and turned patients with appropriate body mechanics, administered oral and subcutaneous medications, documents assessments and nursing interventions, and assisted in activities of daily living!
