Octolytics provides high definition visualization of key metrics for Mobile Network Operators to gain new insights in the air-gap between the cell tower and the mobile handset. Armed with telemetrics, MNOs are better able to minimize operational costs and to optimize capital expenditures. Competitition is fierce, so the competitive edge here is compelling. Responsible at Octolytics for research and development of telemetry sensors and big data analytics for MNOs and their customers. We were building analytics engines to turn massive amounts of key performance indicators into actionable operational decisions, business and market data and even personal security and convenience. Technologies included Mongo DB, Hadoop, iOS and Android mobile application development, Swift, Ruby, XCode and Davlik, Eclipse, Jira, Confluence, BitBucket, SDK’s, API’s, JDK, Tomcat, threadsafe O/S resource issues and other relevant IDE tools and processes for Agile software development. Responsible for the MRD, TRD and user experience to include LDAP integration, deployment, enrollment and battery usage. The main area of focus for these applications and platforms was to support the capture and analysis of Key Performance Indicators for 3G, 4G and LTE transmissions from Cell Towers to Android and iOS devices. These KPI’s from the Radio Access Network included RSRP, RSSI, RCPI, TTM, signal velocity, ECNO, RSRQ, Capacity, Queuing, noise power density, etc. Also tasked with operational issues.

WHS enjoyed explosive growth in recent years, and I was drawn to this project due to the quality of the offering and the caliber of the technorati who work there. Web Application Security is critical for organizations and the awareness in the market has been piqued. I found the technology absolutely fascinating and have enjoyed researching, writing and speaking about WebAppSec at every opportutinty. I was responsible for International Channel partners in Asia and Latin America, and provided support for Europe as needed. I worked closely with Web Application Firewall partners. I built demonstrations and a repository of tools for resellers to use to help them to come up to speed with the WebAppSec environment. Obtained certified training to become a subject matter expert in Web Application Firewalls from f5 and Imperva. Developed expertise in mobile web application security. Developed skills within the Threat Research Center using Burp and homegrown tools to assess Java, RUBY, REST, Regex, HTML, DOM, SQL, C, C++, iOS and Android code for vulnerabilities such as XSS, CSRF, Content Spoofing, abuse of functionality, cache poisoning, and all manner of injections. Built the global channel program and tools repository, developed training for dozens of partners, built sales and channel presentations. Worked closely with Sales. Signed four international and domestic Distributors. Worked in Australia, Singapore, Japan, Korea, VietNam and Malaysia. My business card had "Technical Evangelist" on it...this has been a lot of fun.

Vorstack was an exciting place to be, mostly because it was an opportunity to work with Joe Eandi, the CEO and Founder. Joe's one of the most solid entrepreneurs I've had the pleasure of working with and it has been a really terrific experience. After one year, he decided to pivot the direction of the company so it was a good time for me to work on another project. Gordy Campbell has an incubator in Sunnyvale and I really wanted to work with Paul Master, so I went to Sviral. There were only 8 of us at the time ... it was a very cool project. Joe recently took a $5M A round, so he's continuing to build it out.

Managed research and authorship in the CloudShield division, an ultra high speed deep packet inspection platform used by federal governments and Tier One Telcos globally. Developed Security and sales tools for Lawful Intercept, DDOS, DNS, Threat Intelligence, Smart Grid and other related issues. Responsible for all content including white papers, competitive analyses, demos, sales training, customer presentations, trade show materials, beta programs. Worked closely with sales and customers domestic and abroad. Assisted Product Management with product development by bringing research and feedback from the field. Worked to raise the bar of security expertise within the organization and sought to develop a high-performance team in the product management group. Interacted with Training, Sales Engineering, Sales, and the Office of the CTO. Supported Business Development by generating materials to order. While at SAIC, I achieved CISSP status and was inducted into the FBI's Infraguard program.CloudShield was a very frustrating environment as it was in post-acquisition turbulence. Revenue plummeted dramatically, turnover was high, and morale was very low.

9Proof is a very unique Information Security company providing pervasive encryption, including voice, and computer sterilization technology. 9Proof is based in Italy, with offices in Hungary and California.The private investor in Italy pulled support for 9Proof in America within three months of the launch. During this time, obtaining venture backed funding for a foreign company was not an easy proposition and I was not able to make it happen fast enough. If I had been able to get more sales early on, it could have changed the outcome entirely.

This was my chance to work directly for Bob Walters, CEO, whom I'd worked with as a partner while at NetScreen. Untangle built a really clever Open Source Security Gateway under Dirk Morris. The target was the SMB market through a channel of several hundred partners globally driven by an inside sales team. The Freemium model was not appealing to the SMB themselves, who may not have an understanding security. Some unscrupulous resellers could use the freeware and charge the customer for it as a managed service. But the real hindrance was the World Economic Crisis of 2008. SMBs stopped spending anything at all and Investors pulled back on planned funds for Untangle. Bob Walters scaled it back to a web-based sales model and continues to run a viable business all these years later.

Working with Dr. Shane Shook, a long-time collaborator, we set about building a practice for Enterprise Risk Advisory services that would also service the newly mandated e-Discovery requirements for publicly held firms. The concept was that forensics experts could be utilized for either purpose: Enterprise Risk Services when they weren't engaged on e-Discovery projects and vice-versa.The practice was built up to ~80 people in 8 faciliites within a year and was subsequently dismantled by the incoming CEO. During that time, e-Discovery regulations were new and there was not much demand. Based in San Francisco, California. LECG provides Expert Services in more than 24 disciplines and has 40 offices in 10 countries.

Formerly Mistletoe Networks, this startup had undergone several iterations of business models and leadership since 2002 for the Security System on a Chip developed under the brilliant Kevin Rowett. The last motion was to attempt to integrate the chip into an appliance and find a use for it using IPFlows. As I was responsible for Business Development, to include Alliances, Channel partners, and solutions development, I worked with Enterasys and NetWitness to build out a Lawful Intercept solution for a foreign government - who never actually paid for it. We took the chipset to the NSA and shopped it to Juniper and any others who would see us. On April 5, 2008 I was in a serious roll-over car accident and was unable to resume working for more than 8 months.

Responsible for Alliances, Emerging Technologies, and Appliance development from marketing, sales, and technical perspectives. SurfControl was a great company that I have been very fond of for some time, but it was going to be sold to it's arch-competitor, WebSense so I pursued the opportunity with Dr. Shane Shook at LECG - and was back in San Francisco!

On the day that I started at CA, I was told that they were closing the office and that I was assigned to San Francisco. This added 70 miles a day of driving in one of the worst traffic corridors in the country...and that was just to start. I have a lot of respect for CA and their portfolio...they wanted to make a credible security presence in the Silicon Valley and I was excited to be part of it. There was a lot of talent leaving CA at the time that I was there and when I had the chance to leave for a more traditional software startup, whom I had partnered with at NetScreen and Nokia, I gladly made the jump. My commute was reduced to six miles with one stoplight.

I started off as Executive Business Development for a few years at NetScreen with Janine Roth, which was a truly wonderful role with a great leader. NetScreen was bought by Juniper and BD was dissolved... I moved into Emerging Technologies with Dean Hickman-Smith, which was a blast! Juniper lost the meritocratic DNA required in the Silicon Valley, at least in my area of the firm, so the passion dwindled and after the umpteenth poorly planned re-org, I opted out.
