I love creating software! I love it so much that I have a PhD in computer engineering.You’ve probably seen my work - if you’ve ever watched a syndicated TV show, I worked on the software that added commercials to it and delivered it over satellite to your local station. If your kids are in school, there’s a good chance that I wrote the software that tests them. Those billboards you pass on the road and the advertisements you see in stores? I designed solutions for printing signs on large format printers and color copiers.I’m a quick learner - over the years, I’ve done just about everything from BIOS programming to full stack web development. Got a new framework or API? No problem. At my last job, the CEO told me that I was “the one guy he knew that could do anything he asked.”QA departments love me - when I deliver software to them, it works. I use unit testing and TDD techniques, static code analysis tools, and my background in engineering to write solid code. I’m also very good about documenting my work and explaining it to others.I keep my skills up to date. I follow “Uncle Bob” Martin’s blog, love Joel Spolsky’s writing, reread the “Gang of Four” book on “Design Patterns” every year, browse “The Pragmatic Programmer” from time to time, and I think that Michael Feathers’ book on working with legacy code is brilliant. I bought Martin Fowler’s book on refactoring when it first came out and still cringe when I hear people use the word “refactoring” as a synonym for “rewrite without testing”. Every weekend, I catch up on css-tricks.com and Smashing Magazine.In short, I’m the engineer of your dreams. Senior Software EngineerPerformance Matters Feb 2011 - Jun 2017Folsom, California, UsPerformance Matters provides software as a service to school systems across the US. I’ve worked on over a dozen projects at the company, such as writing a high performance pure Java PDF generation system for laying out and printing custom scan sheets for tests. I created a Switchboard application for receiving scan sheets in multiple formats (PDF, JPG, TIFF, etc.), normalizing them to a common input format, submitting them to scan engines for analysis, and posting the results to a database for analysis. I also wrote a custom scoring application using HTML5, JavaScript, Bootstrap, SASS/Compass, responsive CSS, JSPs, many custom jQuery plugins, JUnit, and QUnit. I integrated several third party APIs into our product (GradeCam, Safari Montage, LTI, etc.). I worked on our Single Sign-on project to get it to work with ADFS. I worked on an offline HTML5 application (FASTe Observer) for evaluating teachers, principals, and staff. The system is customized to work on tablets such as the iPad and makes use of the HTML5 appcache and local storage, jQuery, jQuery UI, JSPs, and a large amount of JavaScript. I’ve worked on our metadata server, reports server, legacy ADMS system, and our front-end CKEditor extensions. I’ve consulted with other projects, written a parser for the QTI specification, set up a local build server, converted many of our projects to Maven, and participated in interviews of prospective new developers. I've used Google's Closure Compiler, YUI compressor with Ant, YSlow, Wireshark, Java/JMX, and Firebug to measure and improve performance on the applications. I've performed unit testing using JUnit, QUnit, and Selenium WebDriver. I’ve also worked with our dev/ops team for the last year. I’ve also done some nights and weekends work on “skunkworks” projects to test the feasibility of using neural networks to improve some of our systems. -

In the last year, I led teams that delivered four consecutive projects on schedule with successful deployments to over 1100 TV stations. I led the Digital Media Gateway project, a Java-based client/server application for the encoding and delivery of video from large content providers to over 1100 television stations around the country. The software has been used at CNN, WB, ABC, CBS, Disney, and at various universities around the U.S. I helped transition Pathfire into high definition MPEG-2 television delivery. I also worked on Pathfire Direct (a C#/.NET p2p application for the encoding and transport of Windows Media Video, used at Turner and Fox) and Pathfire On Demand (a Struts-based application for the storage and delivery of video). I helped integrate Pathfire technology with DG FastChannel's Spot Box. I was also instrumental in developing DG's upcoming Direct Response project. -
Palm Pda Software DeveloperBlue Heat Software 2001 - 2001Blue Heat began as a developer of mobile games for the Palm PDA market. I worked with a former ZapMedia colleague to create a demo for a Palm PDA baseball game. I ported a prototype Visual Basic game program into a robust game engine in C. I developed custom graphics and animation routines for the Palm PDA platform. I created an application framework for Palm game programs. The other co-founder took the demo and went on to form a multi-million dollar game business.

Founding Member/Software DeveloperZapmedia 1999 - 2001I was one of the five initial members of this start-up that created a set-top box (the "ZapStation") for surfing the web and playing MP3 music, DVDs, and web video. I developed 14 provisional patents and 4 final patents for ZapMedia intellectual property. I was the engineering liaison to the marketing, legal, and art departments for various projects. I worked the CES 2000, CES 2001, RealNetworks and Internet Device Builder trade shows. As an engineer, I worked on the general Java and C software. I also developed an option ROM security module in 80386 assembly for the system BIOS. I integrated the COM-based RealNetworks codec into the ZapStation. I wrote DVD drivers based on the Sigma Designs, InterVideo and Microsoft DirectShow COM-based DVD APIs. I integrated special security features of the Quantum QuickView multimedia hard drive into the ZapStation. I added international support and helped design a remote control and keyboard for the set-top box. I also helped develop the user manual.

Contractor In Melbourne, AustraliaColorbus 1999 - 1999The Australian office of Colorbus needed a consultant to update their printing software to handle Japanese fonts and to pass Adobe's certification process. I quickly made modifications to the Colorbus PostScript RIP (raster image processor) to obtain Adobe certification. I extended the PostScript RIP to handle custom Japanese fonts provided by Ricoh. I also created PostScript Printer Descriptions (PPDs) for the Ricoh copier.

I created two proprietary error diffusion and screening algorithms to enhance large format printouts on inkjet and electrostatic printers. I worked on X and MFC GUIs for a C/C++ system for print shops. I wrote SBus and PCI device drivers to interface computers to color copiers. I maintained a PostScript RIP (raster image processor) and devised methods for color calibration. I worked with Ricoh to develop print solutions for a Ricoh color copier. I worked with Xerox and Olympus to enhance the NTX large format printer. I created Java/JNI programs for Xerox to interact with a customized PostScript RIP. I worked with Sun Microsystems to use the VIS instruction set of the SPARC CPUs to enhance performance of the RasterServe software. I wrote SBus device drivers for the Xerox 5775, Xerox MajestiK, and Canon color copiers. I developed a Motif/X Window System widget set for the RasterServe software.
