For over 20 years, I have been a certified alpine ski instructor and an avid runner. I also have personal training and group fitness instruction experience. In 2010, I went back to college to begin completing a Masters in Physical Therapy program. However, along the way my goals changed, and I completed a certificate in Health Information Technology program specializing in technical and software support.I love teaching skiing and apply my teaching skills to teaching medical staff how to document in an electronic health record system. When I was a personal trainer, I kept a paper file for each client. I had a questionnaire to learn their past exercise history, current activity level and what their goals were. I kept track of all of their workouts with sets, reps and weight for each exercise. Over time, we had a visual record of their progress. I'm sure if I was still personal training, my paper files would be electronic now just like paper medical records have become electronic.I am also an avid runner having completed ten 100-mile trail races and over 50 more ultra distance races ranging from 50k to 100 miles. I keep track of my miles and vertical climb on a weekly and monthly basis. Keeping track of my miles and other activities is important to prevent overuse injuries and excessive fatigue. Similar to an electronic health record where health markers like cholesterol, blood pressure and glucose are tracked.All this to say that I love training medical staff on the use of an electronic health record. I believe in a methodical, skill building approach similar to skiing or training for an ultra-distance race. I acknowledge end users having different learning styles and rates of comprehension. I enjoy the challenge of determining each person's learning style and do my best to accommodate each one and the group as a whole. I believe there is no such thing as a dumb question and I strive to establish a trusting relationship with all my clients whether in a medical setting or out on the ski hill.
