About Kelsey Abel

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.” Albert EinsteinI believe that sustainable solutions to the world’s biggest problems can be achieved only by looking at the complex set of interdependent systems that created them. Rather than trying to squeeze out a 5% efficiency gain by streamlining existing processes, I want to ask how the entire system could be redesigned to achieve dramatic and sustainable increases in both efficiency and equity. A voracious learner and attempted polymath, I seek to know at least a little about everything, and to bring all of this knowledge to bear when conceptualizing a problem. I love learning and collecting new facts and trying to understand the interconnections and interdependencies between seemingly unrelated topics.Nothing inspires me more than having conversations with people who share this fascination, yet whose skillset, background, and mindset vary dramatically from mine. These differences not only check my assumptions about a given problem, but also lead me to consider solutions I could never have generated on my own. This way of thinking has allowed me to thrive in a variety of research settings encompassing engineering design for disaster relief, space policy around using AI in space, the viability of a gas tax in the era of the electric car, analysis of existing and emerging electric utility business models, and how game theory and simulation modeling can inform issues of national security. Currently, I am studying regions known as Food Deserts. Specifically, I am trying to understand how to effectively invest public capital to improve food access in underserved urban communities, taking into account individual characteristics of the region and its residents. This work unites my technical abilities of modeling and simulation with my desire to combat equity issues by engaging stakeholders, informing decision makers, and collaborating with academics from a variety of fields. When I'm not at work, I love to cook, dance (my favorites being Texas two-step and swing), and amble around second-hand stores looking for inspiration.
