Ask any NASCAR pit crew--it's hard to work on something when it's still in motion. But that doesn't mean the way we've always done it is the way we always should. After all, the world has changed: the average American teenager or adult now consumes nine to ten hours of media per day. Climate change is accelerating at a faster and faster pace.Shouldn't our systems change, too? Why should any child attend a school whose last major redesign intended to produce model-T factory workers? Why should any child play at a park whose last major safety review was conducted before the invention of the internet? Institutionalized racism and wasteful environmental practices are equally challenging to tackle, but letting sleeping dogs lie isn't an option. As W. Edwards Deming said, "a bad system will beat a good person every time."My passions are studying systems and finding ways to make permanent policy changes so that our best intentions and our automatic choices are one and the same. I have honed my expertise for over a decade, and have been endorsed as a Nationally Board Certified Teacher by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards for the quality of my teaching and my ability to enact positive change in my community. I am proud to be a NBCT in adolescent and young adult English language arts at Gladstone High School, where I currently work on equity leadership, curriculum develpment and adoption, and co-teaching peer training while teaching advanced and co-taught English language arts.
