I was overjoyed to get the opportunity to work with the students and fellow tutors at Community College of Denver. Through support in mathematics subjects ranging from finite math and math for liberal arts to calculus (with more soon to come), I worked hard to connect with and relate to students, helping them problem-solve through the challenges to success in their higher math courses. The Excel Knowledge tutor team here is fantastic and a form of support in itself for employees, and I looked forward to our action-packed and thought-stimulating work daily.

In pursuit of further culture and language teaching, Mitoyo International Exchange, Inc. was co-created by Yousuke Ichikawa as a privately owned international language school. Through my role as activities director and lead English teacher, I regularly visited local elementary schools and local technical school to offer English language and U.S. culture lessons. I also constantly researched new methods for learning, and initiated a few innovations such as integrating the Montessori method into the toddler and elementary school classes, holding monthly English karaoke song and movie nights, and hosting traveling foreigners from different countries to participate in our language classes. In 2008, a local Mitoyo City news channel even featured one of my visits to Takuma Elementary School, along with one French and two Czech guests I brought with me, as an all-volunteer multinational English class.

The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme is administered through the collaboration of Japan’s local government authorities, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), and the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations (CLAIR).Aiming primarily to promote grass-roots internationalization at the local level, the JET Programme invites young college graduates from around the world to participate in international exchange work and be involved in foreign language education at Japan’s local government offices, Boards of Education, elementary schools, junior high schools, and senior high schools. The JET Programme has gained high acclaim both domestically and internationally for being one of the world’s largest international exchange programs. We hope that all people involved in the JET Programme, both the participants and the local people they live and work with, will build an international network and become successful in today’s global society.The JET Programme has grown significantly over its 30 year history, with the number of countries participating in the JET Programme growing from four to forty, and the number of participants from 848 to 4,952.
