About Kelsi Matwick, Ph.D.

I am a linguist who has a passion for transforming talkers and writers into inspiring communicators. I combine this passion with my love of cooking to apply a relatable approach to teaching effective communication, whether in the classroom, professional field, or social setting. I have been teaching for the last thirteen years at the university-level: eleven of Academic Writing, Professional Communication, and Technical Communication and two years of Spanish. I have a Foreign Language Teaching Certificate and a Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) Certificate. I teach Technical Communication at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona. I enjoy teaching the value of writing and communication to students from all majors. I teach technical writing online at Embry-Riddle WorldWide. In addition, I teach professional communication at the University of Florida in the University Writing Program. I strive to help students develop their writing skills and critical thinking. I teach Food, Media, and Culture in the Department of Journalism at UF and Quest 2: Future Food as a General Education course.I received a Ph.D. in Linguistics at the University of Florida (2016). My dissertation examined language and gender in cookbooks by female celebrity chefs, a topic that extended to television cooking shows and a full-length manuscript co-authored with my twin sister (Keri): Food Discourse of Celebrity Chefs of Food Network (Palgrave Macmillan, 2019). My passion for language began in Spanish language and literature at the University of Notre Dame where I received a BA and MA in Spanish. I have studied abroad in Spain, France, Buenos Aires, London, and Tokyo. I studied French, art, and history in Paris and researched language acquisition in Montpellier, France.

My engagement added richness to the research landscape in the School of Humanities (SoH) and led to fruitful collaboration with faculty and staff. A grant proposal developed the foundation of a student research journal for introducing students to a research culture fostered by the SoH. The flagship product will be the Pioneer Road Journal of Undergraduate Research, published annually and open to the 4,700+ students enrolled in NTU's SoH from first-year to fourth-year. This will be the first undergraduate research specifically for NTU SoH students. I wrote an article on Singapore and the United States on culinary diplomacy with faculty at NTU. The article is interdisciplinary, combining my strengths in language and food policy with their strengths in language and communication. The publication has led to ongoing and productive projects in food security and sustainability, both priorities for NTU and Singapore.
