Ports are the gateway for most of the imported goods used in the homes and businesses of all Western Australians. For exporters, it is a vital link to world markets. To ensure the State's future trade needs are met, well-planned port facilities are essential. I started with Westport as Technical Lead for the Environment in 2018 and together with Matt Buckels, PDM - Environment, built Westport’s $20M environment and social work program from scratch, harnessing the collective expertise of agency staff, scientists and consultants through a series of working groups and other multi-disciplinary platforms. During these 4+ years, I have built, cultivated and strengthened internal, inter-departmental and external relationships with technical experts and stakeholders.I am passionate about delivering great environmental and social outcomes for the State and the WA community, as demonstrated by my work history, reputation and accomplishments. At Westport I was responsible for the Project adopting PIANC’s Working with Nature approach, which is now embedded in our project objectives and as a key requirement in all key consultancy contracts. Together with technical experts from our project partners and WAMSI, I played a key role in the development of the $13.5M WAMSI Westport Marine Science Program, which delivers the science, sophisticated analytical tools and an open-source modelling platform to facilitate ‘true’ cumulative EIA at an ecosystem scale – which has not been done previously in WA. Equally innovative is the approach Dr Luke Twomey (WAMSI), Dr Richard Walley (APP) and I developed to identify and map the cultural and spiritual values of Cockburn Sound so that these can be taken into account in decision-making processes and be protected for the future. The document is to set out a coherent framework that assists proponents of seismic surveys and the Regulator with ensuring that all risks associated with proposed seismic activities to aquatic resources and fisheries are as low as reasonably practical (ALARP) and 'acceptable'. The document will provide specific guidance on: (i) how to conduct a risk assessment that takes into account the Department's concerns; and (ii) when and where mitigation and control measures should be strengthened. Every fishery engaged in the MSC program submits to a rigorous, transparent, stakeholder engaged, scientific assessment. Building on the Department of Fisheries strong record in fisheries management the vision is to have every WA fishery to the MSC standard within the next two decades.Each WA commercial fishery will be scored against the international standard for sustainable fishing set by the MSC, which is based on three principles:Principle 1 - Sustainable fish stocks: The fishing activity must be at a level, which sustains the fish population. Certified fisheries must operate in a way that avoids over-exploitation so that fishing can continue indefinitely.Principle 2 - Minimizing environmental impact: Fishing operations should be managed so that the structure, productivity, function and diversity of the ecosystem on which the fishery depends is maintained.Principle 3 - Effective management: The fishery must meet all local, national and international laws and have a management system, which can respond to changing circumstances while maintaining sustainability.To date, the western rock lobster fishery, Shark Bay prawn fishery and the Exmouth prawn fishery have successfully obtained MSC certification. Blue Office Productions was born when John Totterdell and I (both MIRG Australia) had plans for a couple of educational documentaries on WA coastal ecosystems, despite the total lack of experience in the field of natural history film making. Fortunately, we ran into David Riggs and Jennene Paris, who had just broken away from National Geographic in order to produce independent documentaries.
