I have 30+ years experience designing, developing and deploying systems for both commercial and government applications, with leadership skills acquired by managing both large and small software teams. I've maintained up-to-date, hands-on development skills throughout my career. I have extensive experience in web and mobile applications, designing and developing services for cloud deployment, modeling and simulation, 3D graphics and distributed computing. In scope, I've designed and built applications and systems that span from desktop applications, to mobile apps, to enterprise solutions. My deep technical experience with numerous programming languages (Java, C++, C#, Python, JavaScript, Objective-C) as well as platforms and frameworks (Windows, Linux, Mac, Node.js, Android, iOS) allows me to make sound decisions in defining architectures for new systems and products.Having worked at multiple start-ups (including my own), I'm accustomed to working directly with key customers, writing proposals, leading development teams and technical design, and working with product managers to define innovative, cost-effective solutions to hard technical challenges.

Senior Software ArchitectDigium Jun 2013 - Jan 2018Huntsville, Alabama, UsI worked with an amazing team developing Respoke, a web-based real-time communications platform, as well as other cloud communication solutions. Respoke allowed web developers to add secure pub/sub messaging, audio and video communications to any web application via a simple-to-use JavaScript library for web apps, or our open-source Android and iOS SDK for mobile apps. Respoke allowed you to bridge mobile, web apps and the telephone network so that clients can communicate wherever they are. No browser plug-ins for end users to worry about. Respoke's cloud-based architecture dynamically scaled to meet demand. -
Senior Systems ArchitectResearch Innovations Incorporated Aug 2012 - May 2013Alexandria, Va, UsI was involved with the design and development of software for our U.S. Army CERDEC customer. We were developing apps for Android in Java, designed to integrate with emerging Army hand-held platforms (Nett Warrior and DARPA's Trans Apps), as well as related web-applications that exchange information with the hand-held apps. Web applications were developed in Java using the Spring framework, using jQuery for the browser-based client. -
Software ManagerDigium Sep 2009 - Aug 2012Huntsville, Alabama, UsI manged the software team that developed Asterisk SCF, an open-source, unified communications platform. Asterisk SCF was intended to do for the enterprise what Asterisk did for the small-medium sized business. (Asterisk is the most-widely deployed open-source telephony/VOIP platform in the world.) I also performed development tasks, developing primarily in C++, incorporating boost and other open-source libraries. Asterisk SCF was designed as a distributed application with state replication to support fault tolerance, using ZeroC's Ice middleware. We applied an agile development process (using the Atlassian tool-chain) to manage the development of Asterisk SCF. For more infomation: https://wiki.asterisk.org/wiki/display/TOP/Asterisk+SCF+Home -
OwnerThought Studios, Inc. Jun 2002 - Nov 2009I was a founder and President of Thought Studios, Inc. It became a side venture in 2004, and is now dissolved.

Sr. Member Of Technical StaffDigital Fusion Solutions, Inc. (Acquired By Kratos) May 2005 - Sep 2009UsI provided project management, design guidance and development support to the Matrix data collection / analysis system for the Army’s Fires User Integrated TestBed (FUITB) in the Air and Missile Defense Battle Lab (AMDBL) at Ft. Bliss. The system we created records high-bandwidth DIS and HLA traffic to an Oracle database in a distributed simulation test-bed. The application integrates video and voice feeds into an integrated, TiVo-like interface for monitoring and reviewing exercise participants. The multi-faceted project builds on numerous technologies, especially Java and the Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP).In parallel with the Matrix effort, I was the lead architect for the AwareGlobe project, a 3D GIS application which brings in live tactical data links (Link 16, TADIL-J, JREAP, etc.). The application provides a 3D map display with standard military symbology overlays to display tracked objects on the ground, in the air, and space, as well as geometries such as safe-flight corridors, missile engagement zones, etc. The project is implemented in C# on the .Net framework, and is sponsored by the Army Space and Missile Defense Command (SMDC).In addition I authored significant portions of the company's proposal for the ITAC contract with the U.S. Army, which resulted in a win of the 5-year, $118 million contract. I led writing on a required sample task, and provided significant input to the technical and management sections of the proposal. -
Principal Simulation ArchitectSaic 2002 - 2005Reston, Va, UsI was the technical lead for the redesign effort of IDEEAS constructive simulation application. IDEEAS is a U.S. Army research tool for performing force-on-force simulation with high-fidelity weapon models (existing and conceptual). The redesign effort migrated legacy FORTRAN models by applying design patterns and object-oriented analysis to establish IDEEAS as a highly-scalable Java simulation framework. While I came on-board a year into the effort, I had a significant impact on several key areas of the IDEEAS design. I designed a new architecture for human behavior modeling, using a technique of parallel state machines to model the innate multitasking capability of human (and machine) decision making. I also supported the integration of IDEEAS into large distributed exercises using HLA. Over 3000 battlefield entities were modeled in real-time across a WAN between Huntsville, Orlando and Washington D.C. -
Software Development ManagerNokia 2000 - 2002Espoo, Southern Finland, FiI was a software developer and later a manager for the development of the NetAct(TM) Element Management System (EMS) for broadband communications at Nokia’s Huntsville site. The enterprise Java solution applied J2EE patterns using BEA's WebLogic container. I worked with the engineering team to develop a scalable J2EE solution, with a development team that span across multiple development sites. -
Technical Director - Software ProductsAegis Technologies 1995 - 2000Arlington, Virginia, UsI was responsible for a wide array of simulation software applications, as well as a continually-improving software process. I maintained a hands-on role in designing and developing a suite of applications for supporting the DOD High Level Architecture (HLA). My programming experience included Windows-based C++ development and some Java development. We worked closely with the Defense Modeling and Simulation Office (DMSO) and other agencies on a national research and development initiative which resulted in the development of IEEE standard 1516, known as the High Level Architecture (HLA) for Modeling and Simulation. I represented DMSO in its HLA outreach and training in the U.S. and Europe. My development team created the Object Model Development Tool that DMSO distributes freely to HLA developers. I led several successful proposal efforts, while helping the company add a commercial product capability to its existing service offerings. The company grew from around 35 to over 120 employees during my time there. -
Vice PresidentHuntsville Sciences 1994 - 1995I provided programming and technical guidance to all company software projects, including thermal heat flow analysis for NASA and BM/C3I simulations for the U.S. Air Force. I was instrumental in landing the company's first commercial work, which was developing simulations of Chrysler's electronic packaging assembly lines. The assembly line simulations were used to develop more efficient assembly approaches, resulting in millions of dollars cost savings per year.
