  • General Dynamics Robotic Systems
    Lead System Administrator
General Dynamics Robotic Systems Aug 2005 - Aug 2009

It started with fixing Eclipse Pango errors for our embedded developers on Solaris. Then installing (easy) and configuring (not so easy) Fedora (now 389) LDAP on Red Hat Ent 4 x86_64 integrated with AD. The next thing I knew I was gathering up servers from under desks, in closets, an on bookshelves and wrangling with Facilities to bust out closet walls and create a proper climate controlled data center. In the end I had 50 servers, 2 A/C's, 208V UPS's, HP blades, a growing SAN, two tape robots, a layer 3 switched Cisco network backbone, a direct report and one Intern per Summer. With IT overloaded serving over 500 employees and contractors in a DoD environment, I set up Drupal, Jabber/XMPP, Mercurial, and other programmer-friendly collaboration services behind Untangle, trying to provide a modern work environment for our extremely engineer-heavy crew.
  • General Dynamics Robotic Systems
    Senior Software Engineer
General Dynamics Robotic Systems Jan 2002 - Sep 2005
    Westminster, Md, Us
vxWorks , 80186 Tasking C and embedded Linux coding, JAUS messaging, primarily A2D sensors and actuators and the occasional blinking LED. Wrote control software for M56 smoke generator. Getting a balky HMMWV automatic transmission to shift via robotic actuator, with minimal and slow feedback was a highlight- managing hysteresis was key here.
  • Gte Internetworking / Genuity
    Software Engineer
    Gte Internetworking / Genuity 1999 - Nov 2001
    Us
I did RFC level C++ RADIUS and SNMP programming for AAA and monitoring 1.5million modem, 60,000 NAS, 10,000 Router network. The data resulted in millions of dollars per month of billing. I carried a pager. Our customers were every ISP you ever heard of and most you didn't. GTE spun us off into Genuity Inc., we had a huge IPO, and then we went bankrupt.Genuity was publicly known for its "Black Rocket" commercials, a pre-provisioned web services venture out of Massachusetts that lost a lot of money and was never 1/10 the size of dial up services that paid the bills. But they really went bust spending 7 Billion dollars on a nationwide backbone network that nobody needed, and was more expensive then the lines we were renting from MCI. If you bought dark fiber on the cheap in the mid-2000's, thank Genuity.Every year we built out a dial-up network we knew would be obsolete before we finished it, as DSL and Cable Modems were arriving. I worked there two and 3/4 years. I knew it couldn't last, and it didn't. It was a classic dotBomb.

We got it done on time and had a role in verifying the new flight simulator code and recovering the spacecraft.
  • Nasa Casi/Rms Associates
    Senior Internet Engineer
    Nasa Casi/Rms Associates 1996 - 1998
Webmaster (one of several) at NASA's library, back in the day when we debated if using a JPEG over a GIF was inconsiderate due to bandwidth considerations! haha. SunOS and AIX web servers and full text search. Remember Gopher?CSC took over the contract and called me and wanted me to come back because I actually DOCUMENTED what I did there. The transition was not handled very smoothly, as I got the offer for continuance a few days before the turnover and a few months after my layoff notice- I had already moved on.
