As Global Process Chemistry Coordinator, I had the responsibility to plan and advise on the direction of new research developments and for fundamental research related to polyols, functional fluids, alkoxylation catalysts and new process technology. My active research responsibilities included the development of new DMC (double metal cyanide) catalysts, the evaluation of new developments in other alkoxylation catalysts, process improvements and the extension of DMC catalysis to performance polyethers and ethoxylates. In the conventional catalysis area, I developed processes for rigid polyols using both amine and KOH catalysis. I coordinated global intellectual property activities for polyethers and served as an important contributor to patent portfolio analysis and to the development of programs to obtain significant cost reductions. Other responsibilities were to monitor competitive polyether technology and to propose responses to competitive technologies, to propose programs for the expansion of polyethers into new markets. I assisted in the licensing of DMC technology and developed strategies for application to new markets.I have 20 patents with additional applications in the approval process. A number of these patents have had substantial commercial impacts. In 2001, I was one of four individuals who was recognized with the Otto Bayer Award for development of Bayer’s IMPACT Technology.
