The Civil Engineering program at the NSCC Waterfront Campus has developed my skills in planning, designing, construction, and maintenance of structures and public works, and altering geography to suit human needs. As a Civil Engineering Technologists, I will be able to work on various aspects of built structures, highways, marine structures and municipal infrastructure. This program has taught me how to apply engineering principles and practices to analyze and solve complex technical problems, test and analyze materials and structural elements and research and prepare graphical and other technical documents. I have also learned to interpret the National Building Code and other Codes, Standards and Regulations appropriate to the practice of civil engineering. This program has taught me how to complete the design of a 10 hectare urban subdivision using Civil 3D modeling software. Topics include the evaluation of existing conditions from survey data, road design, intersection and cul-de-sac design, lot grading, water main system analysis, and sanitary and storm sewer design. (Emphasis placed on the preparation of drawings and calculations to meet industry standards).This course has introduced me to advanced survey techniques for civil design and construction, where I was able to get hands-on experience with total stations and data collectors to capture and process field data, and to place construction stakes. I also developed skills associated with curve and coordinate geometry calculations, topographic surveys and municipal surveys. With an introduction to GPS and control systems. During my second year of the program, I was given the opportunity to be the Material Testing Laboratory Assistant, where I supervised first year students and was able to perform the many tests for my final research project.
