Social justice, rights of women and children, working with passion and integrity to bring out the best in people are the things I stand for. I have been working in the area of offender family violence rehabilitation for the past forty years. My background combines social work intervention in the addictions area, with men who are violent and men who sexually abuse. I am drawn to innovative practice ideas that make a difference and the ability to translate theory into practice. I have held positions as a member and Chair of the Family Violence Advisory Committee/ Te Rangai Whiriwhiri Tukinotanga a-Whanau, a founding member of the National Network of Stopping Violence Services/Te Kupenga Whakaoti Mahi Putanga. I also worked as a part-time lecturer in Social Work at Canterbury University and am now involved full-time with HMA as manager, writer of materials and principal trainer.In my spare time (what is that) I like to encourage practitioners to write down their practice ideas. To that end I have published two books on domestic violence (A Private Affair, 1989 and Feeling Angry, Playing Fair, 1998). I have also co-edited with Arthur Wells, Innovative approaches to stopping family violence, (2003, Steele Roberts: Wellington), with Leon Bakker, Will they do it again? Assessing and managing risk, (2006, HMA Books; and with David Riley, Effective interventions with offenders: Lessons learnt, 2011, HMA Books).I spend most of my time in the training room these days working across New Zealand and Australia. The work I do is working to build capacity and competency of human services staff. In addition I am heavily involved in the design and development of intervention programmes for offenders (general offending and family violence). I am currently Chairperson of Stopping Violence Services Christchurch, an organisation that I founded along with a group of others back in the early 1980's.
