In his three years with LSC he achieved• Transition from 75 predecessor bodies to one; • Developed harmonised funding without destabilising the sector; • Delivered all budgets earlier to the sector; • Drove up achievement rates of learners; and, • Managed a developing capital investment programme in college estates.

• Managing up to 4000 staff in jobcentres with over 100 offices; • Improved most aspects of performance in South West Region from bottom to top;• Won customer service awards for all of the South West Region region’s jobcentres; • Led the introduction of the various New Deal Programmes covering Young People, Long Term Unemployed, Lone Parents and People with Disabilities;• Worked in partnership with other government departments, business, local authorities, for profit and voluntary sector providers of services; • Achieved IiP status earlier than other regions;• Led £100m Community Programme in the North East Region;• Set up interventions such as temporary jobcentres, training and enterprise programmes to deal with mass redundancies in shipyards and other businesses;• Chaired cross government initiatives following social breakdown due to riots and arson on local housing estate in Tyneside until they could be handed over to local leadership. • Invited in 1997 to propose solutions to immediately improve business performance nationally. Set up Employment Service Direct, a distributed 400 seat job placement call centre in 13 weeks from concept to launch. The design overcame major issues such as the time to build a centre, equip and train staff by utilising spare space in over 100 jobcentres using experienced staff so that each office had only a small and manageable recruitment, staff training, delivery and integration of IT requirement. It has now placed hundreds of thousands of people in work. He was awarded a CBE in New Year 2000 for services to employment.
