I am a cultural sociologist at Belmont University in Nashville, TN. I teach classes in Social and Cultural Theory, Sociology of Music, Politics of Knowledge, Urban Community, and Research Methods, as well as study away courses in American Popular Culture, and European Music Scenes and Subcultures. My publications “Behind the Rave” and “The Paradox of Punk” are highly regarded and taught at several universities. Currently, my research focuses on the relationship of musical nostalgia with identity formation in popular culture. In addition to my teaching and research, I have been honored to receive several awards for contributions outside of the classroom including the Harold Love Community Service Award from the Tennessee Governor’s office and Tennessee Department of Higher Education.Like many educators, I have had several opportunities to share my knowledge on particular topics to a variety of audiences. I have spoken to audiences ranging in size from 5 to 500, interviewed by high school papers to the Washington Post and Billboard magazine, aired on local broadcasts to internationally on Bravo and TED.
