The Book Industry Charitable Foundation (Binc) grew out of the wish of bookstore employees to establish a fund to help their colleagues experiencing an unexpected financial crisis. As a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit, we are dedicated to assisting bookstore employees across the country in their time of greatest need. The Foundation typically helps brick and mortar bookstore employees who have a personal financial need arising from severe hardship and/or emergency circumstances.Since our inception in 1996, the Foundation has given over $5 million in tax-free financial assistance grants and higher education scholarships. Collectively, we are the governing body of the trade association of independent bookstores in the United States. There are nine Board Directors and a Board President, who set the guidelines, policies, and goals for the CEO and the organization.We work to ensure the profitability of our member stores; to promote professional development; to advocate on national public policy issues affecting book retail in the United States; to promote Free Speech; to provide tools for selling, marketing, and staff training to our member stores; and to spearhead initiatives and innovation in the independent retail channel.

After college, A Different Light was my dream job. I will always be grateful to Richard Labonte for hiring me. At ADL they gave a kid a chance to learn everything about running a small bookstore. Helping customers with a smile, creating community in a neighborhood with your business, how to deal with publishers, do payroll, sort invoices, put intelligent orders together. ADL had a great crew and in those years was a vibrant, nationally important venue for books.
