About Ken Christensen

I'm a film and video maker working in documentary and digital storytelling. For more than a decade, I've worked as a producer, writer, cinematographer and editor, often all at once.Currently I'm making short films and videos at King County’s Department of Natural Resources and Parks, working across a 2,000-person government agency to document great stories about efforts to preserve the natural environment and make this region a better place to live. Before this, I was a video journalist who at times wrote radio and written features. My has appeared in the pages and programs of NPR, PBS, The New York Times, Bloomberg, Crain’s New York Business, Oregon Public Broadcasting, KUOW, Cascade PBS/Crosscut, and elsewhere. My work has been recognized by five Emmy awards (Northwest region), as well as the Edward R. Murrow Awards, the Online Journalism Awards, and the Seattle chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. Visit https://kenchristensen.com to learn more.

  • Whereby.Us
    Director Of Video
    Whereby.Us Sep 2018 - Mar 2020
    Seattle
I supervised a distributed team of four staff video producers and an illustrator. I led the team in making locally relevant video storytelling for our publications in Seattle, Portland, Miami, Orlando and Pittsburgh. I created systems and processes to manage publishing across multiple time zones, to ensure producers met their deadlines and to encourage collaboration between our centralized team and the local publications we were tasked with supporting. I built out an editorial strategy to align with WhereBy.Us’ larger growth goals, defined our style and standards, created graphics packages to unify our brands' looks, led pitch sessions, edited scripts and gave feedback on content drafts. We helped grow our publications' newsletter and social audiences in five cities. After testing videos on our publications' social media channels, we then developed a suite of underwritten and custom advertising products for the WhereBy.Us Creative Studio, turning successful Facebook and Instagram concepts into well-defined, revenue-generating series that allowed local companies to advertise in our publications. I was responsible for budgeting staff time and production resources toward these projects and, working with the sales director, I produced internal documentation and external sales material to help our business team discuss these content products effectively with prospective clients. We produced custom campaigns for clients like Vulcan, the Gates Foundation, the Miami Foundation, Getaround, the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau and more.

I helped to lead creative concept meetings, worked remotely with colleagues to produce their video scripts, and served as lead post-production editor.
  • Cascade Pbs
    Producer
    Cascade Pbs Apr 2017 - Jan 2018
    Greater Seattle Area
As a producer for EarthFix, I was part of a regional team of reporters covering the environment of the Pacific Northwest. I produced award-winning video features and then reworked the videos into radio and written versions of the stories to maximize distribution. These story packages were published by our local member stations Cascade PBS (then KCTS 9), KUOW, and Oregon Public Broadcasting, among others. They also aired on internationally distributed shows on NPR, PBS and PRI.A few highlights:- I reported about e-waste that was being sent from the U.S. to Hong Kong illegally, a project that spurred the investigation of a top Seattle-area recycler, revealed fraudulent business practices, and ultimately led to prison convictions for the business owners.- I reported on microplastic marine pollution, a project that became the most-watched video in KCTS 9's history with more than 1 million views on Facebook. It was also the centerpiece of a panel discussion at the Pacific Coast Shellfish Growers Association's annual conference, was highlighted at the Seattle Aquarium's 2018 Lighting Talks event and was featured on the Dr. Oz Show.- I launched new digital initiatives, including pitching the concept for and producing the first two episodes for Mossback's Northwest, the station's only digital video series at the time and a first for its sister publication Crosscut. It is still in production six years later.
