Experimental assays, such as neutralizing antibody responses, drug susceptibility, and entry inhibition, were used to study pathogenic immune responses on either X4/R5-tropic cells (HIV) or nonhuman primates (SIV/SHIV). In addition to the research, I helped oversee fiscal management of operating and research budgets, interviewed new employees, hired, oriented, and supervised all research staff. We focused on understanding the basic biology of HIV infection relevant to the clinical management of HIV disease. In collaboration with other labs, I was involved with an envelope protein genetic variation study involving the construction of mutagenized HIV-1 isolates. I was also in charge of constructing mutagenized Gag isolates for in vivo pathogenesis studies in nonhuman primates. -

We confirmed the relative homogeneity of these animals by identifying several MHC class I alleles that are found in more than 50% of the population. I developed the complex resources necessary to perform comprehensive studies of SIV pathogenesis in Mauritian Cynomolgus macaques. Being the first employee of Dr. O’Connor, I played a major role in the actual start up of the laboratory. In addition to the research in the lab, I was responsible for purchasing, grant accounting, and safety liaison. -
Research TechnologistUniversity Of Wisconsin-Madison Feb 2002 - Aug 2005Madison, Wisconsin AreaThe Watkins’ lab focused on the study of the MHC in the rhesus macaque and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte responses to the SIV to determine which elements of pathogenesis are controlled by host genetics. I was involved with the whole-genome sequencing of SIV isolates from our macaque cohorts, starting with initial infections all the way until time of death. With the help of others, I played a major role in genotyping several Cynomolgus macaques in order to build an MHC Class I allele database for the laboratory.
