GALA (Gay and Lesbian Memory in Action Trust) is a 21-year old non-governmental organisation dedicated to (amongst others) archiving and preserving LGBTQIA+ history and movements (for individuals and organisations) in South Africa and parts of southern Africa. In the position of Programme Manager I was responsible for the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of all GALA’s board-approved programmes.Several projects involved organising dialogues between Queer-identifying groups and various entities within the community. The projects were in various states of development when I joined GALA, and therefore required different approaches and levels of engagement.- One of the most notable projects was called the Religious Dialogue, in which activists from Queer organisations met with representatives from faith-based organisations to discuss ways in which the two groups could coexist and work together. - The second notable project was the Southern African Dialogue on Decriminalisation, and involved bringing together a group of young Queer activists from all over Southern Africa, as well as representatives and allies from the legal industry, to address the progress made in the decriminalization of homosexuality and homosexual sexual activity across Southern Africa.- I was also fortunate enough to be involved in the early phases of the project which involved a Diversity Training Manual, which was designed to be workshopped with School Management teams across the country. It was hoped and intended that this manual and these workshops would contribute to making schools across the country safe learning environments for everyone.

  • Private (Self-Employed)
    Freelance Writing, Editing, Translating, Research
    Private (Self-Employed) Jan 2006 - Dec 2012
My research areas have always been focused on issues of gender and sexuality, and their representation in works of literature and film. My doctoral research focussed principally on areas of gender and masculinity studies, as well as migration, through an examination of a selection of works of contemporary German and “Turkish-German” literature and film, with a thematic focus on work produced in German (and Germany), by individuals with a background of migration, or dealing with individuals with such a background. The research attempts to deconstruct the diverse representations of migrant masculinities as they are portrayed by the protagonists of the respective works in an attempt at interrogating (in part) the validity of the concept of the hybrid (and hyphenated) Turkish-German man (and by extension the concept of the hybrid and hyphenated Turkish-German nationality or national identity).Additional academic research areas include marginalized, peripheral and subversive gender expressions, femininity, queer studies, art, film and media studies (visual culture) as well as popular culture.
