Responsibilities are 80% veterinary and 20% keeper. Duties include the general management and oversight of the veterinary hospital including the preventive medical schedules, organizing veterinary rounds, and maintaining hospital equipment. Using technical skills to aid the veterinarian with health examinations, medical treatments, and anesthetic procedures. Using communication skills to coordinate medical procedures, training plans, and act as nutrition liaison between nutritionist, veterinarian, and animal keepers. Provides basic husbandry, handling, and the evaluation of welfare for the animals in our care. Assisting animal keepers in operant training to promote a relationship in which animals choose to cooperate in their own medical care. Acting as institutional registrar by maintaining vital animal records and assisting the director as needed. Will opportunistically provide support to the conservation department by participating in departmental events, or caring for trafficked wildlife confiscated by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife on an as needed basis.
