Like many people’s career paths, my route into the nonprofit and business world has not been a straight line. However, my meandering has given me a wide variety of skills and a unique perspective.I began my professional journey on a well-worn, straight path to being an astronomy researcher. I stuck to the path through undergraduate and graduate school and learned valuable skills along the way such as critical thinking, project management, grant writing, self-starting, pushing harder than you think you are capable of, effective communication, and much more.Somewhere in the middle of graduate school, however, I learned an important fact about myself: I have to love the majority of my job to be happy. I still loved the science of astronomy but I only barely tolerated the day-to-day work. For me, the ends did not justify the means. After coming to this realization, I decided that after finishing grad school, I would try to get to another well-worn path towards a different field that I loved: conservation biology. I tried cutting a trail through, what turned out to be, dense jungle to get to this new path. I never made it.In going off-trail, however, I discovered that there were other, smaller, paths that I could possibly take. Instead of blazing a trail to somewhere it seemed I would never get to, I decided to start meandering down these other paths to see where they would take me. Here, I learned another invaluable lesson: as long as you are willing to take the opportunity to follow them, many times these other paths can get you to where you need to be better than forcing yourself to a popular trail.A series of connecting paths took me to a nonprofit wolf-dog sanctuary where I learned about how nonprofits operate and develop. I learned about the importance of diversified revenue streams, different fundraising techniques, grant writing for nonprofits, program operations, donor stewardship, and how people are at the center of every organization and business, even if it is an animal organization. I also discovered how a working environment can make or break a job which has informed the kind of work culture that I will always strive to create.I eventually turned onto the path that I am currently on at Arula where I am learning about running a business and business development while helping clients with all things development: grants, marketing, fundraising, program structure, strategically planning for the future, and more. Who knows what kind of trail I will encounter in the future, but I am always ready to embrace the opportunity to explore it.
