The Brigham and Women's Hospital Summer Training in Academic Research and Scholarship (BWH STARS) program is a summer program for underrepresented minority students interested in pursuing a career in medicine and research. The program provides students with the opportunity to participate in intensive hands-on training in research, shadow clinicians, and network with member of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School Faculty.I worked in the OB/GYN Lab of Genital Tracts Biology at BWH, where I am involved in basic science research and studying the pathogen, Trichomonas Vaginalis, which causes the most common non viral sexually transmitted infection commonly infecting women of reproductive age. I am looking specifically at the virus, T. Vaginalis virus (TVV), which increases the inflammatory response and exposes the patient to a higher susceptibility to HIV, HPV, cervical cancer as well as to increased complications in pregnant women and their babies. The purpose of my experiment was to find and test inhibitors to TVV and to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms involved when virus-infected T. Vaginalis infects human cervicovaginal epithelial cells.My duties include:• Running assays for my experiment• Analyzing data with Graph Prism• Attending Professional development seminars

The Biomedical Careers Program is an intensive six-week academic enrichment program sponsored by Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. It is hosted by the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Office of Special Academic Programs, whose mission is to increase diversity in the health professions with the ultimate goal of eliminating healthcare disparities through our educational programs, community outreach and healthcare promotion and awareness activities.
