I believe that the craft of software engineering is different from just "coding" or "designing". If coding is knowing how to hammer a nail, software engineering is knowing how to build a house.There are plenty of people who can write a few thousand lines of code; there are few who can put together a half million lines of code in a coherent and maintainable architecture. There are plenty of people who can visualize a design concept; there are not many who can figure out the optimal way to implement that design. There are plenty of people who can put together a team of engineers; there are few who can put together all the development processes, motivational techniques, and tools to put all of those engineers to good use.If you're looking to hire someone to lead or work in your large-scale engineering team, you'll want someone who has engineering skills, not just coding skills. You'll want someone who is detail-oriented but can also see the big picture; someone who's willing to find the root cause of problems instead of just patching them over; someone who's willing to throw away a design and start all over if it means fixing a fundamental design flaw. You'll also want someone who can work well within your team: someone who's amicable, communicative, and cooperative. I can't tell you if I'm the guy for your company.
