Global Cloud Secuirty Response Team LeadSeveral Undisclosed Fortune 100 Companies Feb 2020 - Jan 2021Several companies for which I am under NDA, and cannot disclose their names, have had substantial on-prem security breaches ranging from malware to full internal ransomware attacks. These targeted attacks have risen rapidly in 2020 using "big game hunting" methods which in turn take advantage of the weakness of a classic on-prem flat network. The on-prem network typologies have not evolved much in over 30 years while the threat landscape has evolved to fully automated attacks. Many on-prem data centers are not designed to withstand an internal east-west attack and many companies have been crippled. Backups are ransomewared, along with domain controllers and the AD itself. Companies are struggling to respond, protect themselves, and manage the PR and trust issues as a result of these reoccurring attacks. My role is to engage the board and C-Suite to create and execute a rapid incident response plan that will minimize the risk as soon as possible, install necessary tools in place and harness proper cloud architectures to micro-segment the workloads. So, when a breach happens it is contained in an isolated area without the option to spread throughout the organization. Also, it is necessary to change the user connectivity patterns now that COVID-19 has pushed users to work from home. Securing communications and getting rid of risky, classic VPN connections to full networks by replacing them with micro VPN connections per application. This also results in substantial savings on WAN circuit expenses. Other companies are heading the horror stories and are trying to get in front of the curve. I am hired to architect the solution considering an attack is happening tomorrow at noon, now what?
