He raised and obtained letters of commitment for $4,000,000 of investment in only 3 months, including $350,000 from the State of California, Department of Commerce and Technology. As part of this program, Ken was arguably the first to consider and propose certain novel capabilities and features for the Apple Newton (an early predecessor to the iPhone and iPad), including advanced GIS/GPS capabilities, burst wireless communications, and advanced power generation capabilities driven by motion. WIC's primary focus was the provision of marine "environmental acoustic" services to various Department of Defense (DoD) customers, including the subsea deployment of advanced systems. Importantly, Ken was key in directing company diversification from reliance on waning defense industry contracts to complementary commercial applications, including international oil and gas subsea systems, telecommunication systems support, oil spill response systems, fugitive emissions tracking, hardened portable computer systems, GPS/GIS-based sub-sea survey systems and advanced mechatronic systems. In addition, while with WIC, Ken invented a novel method and apparatus for deployment of optical fiber through the Bering Sea; he evaluated, recommended and implemented new products and technical marketing strategies in subsea construction and telecommunications; directed related “special projects” R&D; evaluated, recommended and pursued corporate acquisition/merger targets; and, established relationships with international clients and partners in the UK.

Manager - Engineering, Marketing And Special ProjectsCal Pacific Drilling Company 1985 - 1987Ken helped turnaround Cal Pacific during a significant downturn in the petroleum industry. Cal Pacific was the first company to develop advanced mobile drilling rig systems for use in California onshore and offshore markets. Ken initiated the acquisition of $20,000,000 offshore drilling equipment to expand offshore drilling operations. He also developed a successful strategy to "recapture" previously "disenfranchised" customers, resulting in $3,000,000 of new annual revenues for Cal Pacific. In addition, Ken pivoted Cal Pacific and reconfigured and re-purposed the company's drilling equipment and personnel to capture new customers in the geothermal drilling arena. He also designed and developed a self-contained drilling rig for use in sensitive environmental areas in California. As part of the turnaround, Ken analyzed company drilling equipment/operations to streamline project implementation at reduced costs; he evaluated historical management methods and interactions to develop policies and guidelines to broaden existing customer base and open new markets. He revised safety guidelines and procedures to comply with current customer requirements; interceded between company supervisors and client representatives to resolve contract disputes; recruited and hired professional and operations personnel to staff new turnkey drilling company, including an affiliate engineering services company; assisted in risk assessment and drafting of novel contract agreements to support turnkey operations and manage associated operational and financial risks.
