Technical Director For Operations Research & System Analysis
CurrentGuiding the support for OSD to conduct objective, computational studies that allow for prioritization of resource allocation for long-term investments. Focus on advanced technologies that may be transitioned into the force, as well as new concepts and new force structures. I draw from my experience as a university educator, especially the fields of research methods, design of experiments, model and simulation best practices, optimization, risk quantification and analysis. I also focus on producing end-of-project clear description of assumptions, methods, findings, and opportunities.
Associate Professor
CurrentResearch into verification and validation of simulations of complex adaptive systems. Proper design patterns for agent-based models and system dynamics models to ensure they match the behaviors of the social systems that they are intended to represent. Published papers on model verification: a model of civil unrest, a model of the labor market, and a model of competing stock trading strategies as in high-frequency trading. Currently working on advanced analytic tools to identify trends in complex time series data. For example, I recently developed Python code to calculate an estimate of the Hurst Exponent (using two methods) to evaluate the long-term correlation of a time series. This has application to data analytics, financial engineering, systems modeling, and risk analysis.Currently teaching (Spring '23) - CSS 659: System DynamicsPreviously: SYS 769 Research Methods; CSS 625 Theory of Complex Adaptive Systems; CSS 739: Agent Based Modeling for Military Applications; OR 531 Analytics for Decision Analysis.
Senior Operations Research & Systems Analyst
At Booz Allen I applied the techniques that I teach: how to discover, analyze, and adapt to complexity behavior in large-scale systems. I leveraged a part-time role into a high-impact position by teaching and coaching a team of operations research analysts in the advanced methods of complex adaptive systems analysis -- many of which are not taught in a traditional classroom. We started by using data analytics to identify and classify system behavior. When the existing system (our customers almost always have an existing, grew-in-place system) exhibits behavior typical of complex adaptive systems, we can be certain that traditional optimization or statistical forecasting techniques will not work. Our team worked to create a best-of-breed toolset to manage in the face of such "wicked" problems. Techniques for dealing with complexity are constantly evolving.
Executive Manager
Full spectrum analysis of captured IEDs and IED materials. TEDAC is an intelligence-enabled science and technology center jointly operated by the Department of Defense and the Department of Justice. It is headquartered at the FBI laboratory in Quantico, VA.
Deputy Director For Intelligence And Analysis
Deputy Director of the Joint IED Defeat Organization, an OSD-level component of the Department of Defense. Provide oversight and direction for all analysis in support of DoD decisions that are directed at defeating the IED as a weapon of strategic influence. Member of the Senior Executive Service.
Modeling & Simulation Integrator
Support CNO N81 (Analysis Directorate) as consultant, developing modern campaign models for program planning, force structure analysis, and development of long-range strategies. Also, integrate campaign modeling and simulation approaches with other M&S programs in systems engineering and training.
